Position Summary:The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is currently recruiting for the Copy Editor position. This student staff position is 20 hours/week and starts at $11.00/hour.







Duties:







Job Posting Summary:



The Northern Light is a weekly University of Alaska Anchorage student publication, funded by both student media fees and advertising sales. The paper is published Tuesdays during the spring and fall semesters and bi-weekly during the summer. The Northern Light is distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Total distribution is 2,000 copies weekly during the spring and fall semesters and 2,000 copies monthly during the summer. In addition to print circulation, The Northern Light publishes new web content weekly on their website: thenorthernlight.org.



The copy editor is responsible for ensuring grammatical and The Associated Press style compliance at The Northern Light. The position proofreads and edits all copy for grammar, spelling, The Associated Press style, content, accuracy, and clarity before publication; informs editors of potential libel, fairness, accuracy, misrepresentation, and content issues; works cooperatively with section editors, layout, writers, managing editor, and executive editor; meets weekly deadlines and maintain flexible work hours, especially Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, to accommodate availability of copy; participates in final proofreading before publication; attends weekly staff meetings and additional meetings as requested, and; teaches other employees the rules of The Associated Press style. The copy editor reports with occasional direct supervision to the managing editor.



Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:



? Preferred ability to edit written material for grammar, The Associated Press style, spelling, content, clarity, and accuracy

? Possess familiarity with Macintosh computers and word processing

? Possess the ability to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with editors; be familiar with design principles and layout procedures

? Knowledge of and experience using The Associated Press stylebook

? Have completed news editing and reporting coursework at the college level, or equivalent experience; demonstrate strong attention to detail

? Knowledge of newsgathering process, university resources, the First Amendment, Freedom of Information Act, and media law, and; have a sensitivity to libel issues.



Required Experience:



No prior experience is required for this position.



Typical Education or Training:



To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment, or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.



Students must possess strong writing and English language skills, as well as a strong interest in features.



Students in this position are typically at sophomore standing or above, but it is not required.



Students are not required to be a journalism major to apply for this position.



This student staff position is 20 hours/week and starts at $11.00/hour.
