Position Summary:The School of Education (SOE), in the College of Natural Sciences and Math (CNSM) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), seeks and exceptional candidate based in the Anchorage area to join its expanding secondary teacher education program. The UAF School of Education is accredited by the national Council for Accreditation of Education Preparation (CAEP).


Provide a wide range of service at the department, school, college and university level. This includes serving on committees, participating in accreditation and continuous assessment activities, completing tasks related to admission of applicants to the internship year; and contributing to on-going secondary department professional development.

Assist with Specialty Program Area reporting for secondary social studies instruction, aligned with the National Council on Social Studies (NCSS) standardsEssential

Provide school based supervision to student teaching interns in the South Central area

Assist with locating placements in South Central schools for undergraduate secondary students who are completing practicum requirements for education foundation coursework prior to the internship year, as well as assisting with placements for South Central based interns in their final year of preparationEssential

Teach secondary education courses that are required for the diverse population of students in the secondary Post-Baccalaureate License/Certificate program

Teach face-to-face education courses in Anchorage

Familiarity with distance delivery strategies using synchronous technology approaches is preferred as distance delivery instruction may be a component of the position to complement state-wide distance delivery of UAF secondary licensure programs

Teach education courses at the upper division and graduate level (as part of the post-bac licensure sequence), and in the future at the entry levels for undergraduate students in Anchorage interested in pursuing a secondary teaching license. Required courses include education foundation courses and internship year courses including methods courses which are offered in all of the major subject areas, classroom management, collaboration and communication, and facilitation of the year-long internship

Collaborate closely with secondary faculty and advisors since secondary degree and program courses, curriculum, fieldwork, assignments and assessments are closely integrated

Assist with the Anchorage based monthly mentor/intern seminar for interns in their final year of supervision and their cooperating teachersEssential

The successful candidates will: teach secondary education foundation and methods courses in Anchorage (preferably in social studies); supervise secondary student teaching interns in Anchorage; and provide service for the secondary department, the SOE, and UAF (e.g. service related to fieldwork coordination, assessment and admissions).

The UAF Secondary Department will be providing a Secondary Post-Baccalaureate graduate-level licensure program (plus optional M.Ed.) to students in face-to-face settings in Anchorage, including on-site supervisor visits. The Department focuses on providing relevant, meaningful, place-based coursework and fieldwork in the unique and highly diverse cross-cultural Alaska context, and emphasizes core practices in teaching as the foundation of the preparation process. Close collaboration among the team of secondary faculty and academic advisors is required to support the alignment between required readings, assignments, assessments, and fieldwork experiences in all required education courses. The secondary teacher education programs at UAF provide excellent professional opportunities for applicants who are motivated by a desire to contribute to meeting the special challenges of working in the Alaska K-12 and teacher education environment. This position prioritizes a candidate who has social studies teaching experience as we need that areas of expertise for teaching and supervision in our programs.
