Job Description

INTRODUCTION

The Chief Strategy and Development Officer (CSDO) reports to the President/CEO and serves as a key member of the Executive Leadership Team. The CSDO is a significant leadership position responsible for managing the organization’s overall strategic planning process and managing the external affairs for the organization. They will serve as a strategic advisor to management at all levels, and lead a team responsible for grants and programs, fundraising and development, communications and marketing, policy and advocacy, and strategic partnerships. The CSDO will collaborate with other executive team members to support a high-quality health care delivery system with a particular focus on team-based care by improving the patient experience of care, our organizational culture, ensuring the financial sustainability of the organization as an important high value part of the health system, and improving the work life of Unity’s staff.

This highly experienced leader will develop and empower high-performing teams. They will be a strategic thinker with strong problem-solving skills and deeply passionate about health outcomes and community change and will bring a broad skillset and experience to support Unity’s continued growth and functioning. Further, the candidate will possess excellent operational and financial acumen and bring a track record of success in developing and implementing innovative health care solutions.

MAJOR DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Strategic planning. Collaborates with senior leaders to devise short and long term strategic and business plans to advance the mission of the organization. Reviews and analyzes progress towards those goals and plans and prepares and delivers presentations and materials to show progress. Assesses how initiatives fit with Unity’s mission, vision, and values, meet current organizational needs, and are feasible within Unity’s workforce capacity and infrastructure.
  • Strategic partnerships. Identifies and maintains key strategic partnerships including hospitals, state agencies, other non-profit organizations and serves as a primary liaison. Ensures that our engagement is aligned with our strategic plans and goals and creates a mutually beneficial partnership.
  • Communications and marketing. Responsible for the organization’s communication strategy including internal communications, external communications, patient communications, and social media/ internet. Manages the company's brand and oversees a public relations and communications plan that enhances the company's reputation and brand positioning. Serve as a lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization
  • Policy and advocacy. Supervises our policy and advocacy approach including the monitoring local/ state policies that impact Unity’s strategic priorities (e.g., homelessness, health equity, Medicaid, DC alliance, immigrant health), development of a coordinated response, coordinating meetings and writing public hearing testimonies and policy briefs. Participates in national advocacy in partnership with other organizations including federal agencies (e.g., HHS, HRSA) and advocacy groups (e.g., NACHC, NHCHC) Oversees the development of a coordinated response to proposed or passed legislation that affects Unity.
  • Fundraising and development. Develop and communicate Unity’s story to external sources. Plan and implement strategies to develop and grow donors, funding and contributions to support the organization. Develops and maintains procedures to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Community engagement. Develops and manages the strategy and infrastructure needed to enhance community engagement volunteer and advocacy opportunities. Creates strategies to incorporate the patient and community voice into our work and serves as a liaison for key community outreach activities.
  • Grants and programs. Provides strategic oversight to our grants and programs department. Identifies opportunities to support and expand programs essential to fulfilling our mission. Ensures alignment with and support for the overall strategic and operational plans for the organization.
  • Other. Provides direction and directives to the department staff in the performance of their duties, establishing work priorities, and in achieving management initiatives. Accomplishing special assignments at the request of the Chief Executive Officer, as required. Provides leadership and consulting support to Unity executives and management in translating the strategic plan.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of broad leadership experience, ideally with experience in fundraising or community engagement
  • Bachelor’s degree, Master’s preferred from an accredited college or university required.
  • Experience working with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs), non-profit mission-based organizations, or in healthcare preferred.
  • Demonstrated track record of success in building and leading teams

  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage a variety of projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining focus on high-level organizational goals.
  • An ability to manage and work effectively within a team - setting clear expectations, delivering feedback, developing subordinates' skills and identifying opportunities for growth
  • Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate closely with others; An exceptionally strong sense of character, integrity, and collegiality
  • Brings a high energy level, sense of ownership and accountability for a challenging work environment
  • Comfortable with and sensitive to co-workers and patients in a multi-cultural environment.
  • Continuous learner who is eager to build knowledge in the organization.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software required.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

This position reports to the President/Chief Executive Officer. This position directly supervises the VP Grants and Programs, Policy and Advocacy Analyst, Director of Fundraising, Senior Director of Communications.
