Job Descriptions:
This position works full-time within the corporate Underwriting Department in St. Petersburg, FL. The Commercial Underwriter assists the Chief Underwriting Officer in setting the underwriting direction of UPC Insurance in all states in which the company does business. The Commercial Underwriter is responsible to take action to achieve results that positively impact profitability and sales for the Commercial Agency Plant. This position prices and underwrites for new business and renewal policies while interacting with all intra company departments.
Organizational Relationships:
The Commercial Underwriter reports to the Chief Underwriting Officer. This position also has regular contact with intra -company departments such as Accounting, Claims, Products, Marketing and the Actuary department. This position also has regular contact with ALL personnel for the Commercial Property Agency Plant as well as contact with Reinsurers such as General Re, Munich Boiler Re, and Verisk. (ISO).
Job Responsibilities:
+ Assist in setting the underwriting direction of UPC Insurance in all states in which the company does business.
+ Contributes to the development, implementation, and monitoring of all underwriting rules, guidelines, policies, and procedures for Commercial Property Accounts.
+ Primarily underwrites and prices Commercial Property for Condominiums, Apartments and HOA's for new business, renewals and or endorsement processing.
+ Possesses superior analytical and math skills.
+ Possesses superior verbal and communication skills.
+ Possesses knowledge of building construction, rating applications, deductible application, Excel spreadsheets, underwriting compliance, property coverage, form application, loss history analysis and extensions of coverage.
+ May assist in conducting audits to ensure proper application of underwriting rules, guidelines, policies, and procedure.
+ Possesses state specific knowledge of the Commercial Underwriting Market to ensure that Quote Proposals being created and delivered are competitive with coverage and price.
+ Make an informed underwriting decision in fast paced environment and upsell decision to Commercial Agents.
+ Collaborate with Product Management on development of new products and programs.
+ Collaborate with Claims on resolution of coverage issues and adverse risk development.
+ Ensures through astute attention to detail and coverage analysis that the established UPC Commercial Underwriting Guidelines for the above are not compromised.
Environmental Demands:
The duties of this position are typically performed in an office setting. There may be some minimal road and air travel involved.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires minimal physical exertion. However, in order to properly perform the functions of the job, good speaking and hearing skills are required.

+ Possess and demonstrate the drive required to build a team that ultimately becomes the premier underwriter of catastrophe exposed property insurance

+ Strong team player able to establish and maintain effective interpersonal relationships
+ Ability to constantly prioritize tasks in order to effectively manage and handle high workloads and to work under pressure
+ Ability to accurately identify and assess a problem, and then offer a viable solution(s)
+ Ability to deal with complexity and to see that underwriting information is complete or incomplete, and to request additional underwriting information if necessary
+ Ability to synchronize and integrate resources at the right time and place to maximize results
+ Customer service
+ Some travel required
+ Professional appearance and bearing is required
Equipment Used:
Computers, calculators, telephones.
Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's degree or commensurate work experience
+ Minimum five (5) years property and casualty Underwriting experience
+ Leadership experience a plus
+ Professional designation desired - CPCU, CIC, AU
Certificates/Licensure:
Not required.
