Position Summary
The Laboratory Director plans and implements the overall laboratory processes and procedures set forth by UCG's Standard Operating Procedures and adheres to the state regulations. The Laboratory Director is responsible for extraction, post processing, and quality control. He/she ensures efficient and effective laboratory operations by properly executing work orders and packing lists, and directing the work of all laboratory employees, including aspects such as their safe operation, legal compliance, and training.

Qualifications
The Laboratory Director shall have:

  • At least a four-year degree from an accredited institution in a technical field, i.e. physics, chemistry, biology, or engineering.
  • At least two years of managerial experience.
  • The ability to lift up to 50 pounds and sit or stand for eight hours per day.
  • Familiarity with cannabis extraction concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of competitors and the market landscape (desirable, but not necessary).
  • Extensive experience and good judgment to properly plan and accomplish company goals.

Job Responsibilities

Laboratory Directives

  • Coordinate with UCG ownership and management to achieve production goals.
  • Communicate with General Manager about incoming feedstock, work orders, and deliveries.
  • Coordinate with Extraction and Support Technicians in planning and fulfilling the manufacturing schedule.
  • Ensure adequate inventory for all product types.
  • Examine incoming feedstock for quality and potential contamination to direct proper preparation for extraction.
  • Manage laboratory employees including interviewing, scheduling, and conflict resolution.

Operations

  • Maximize efficiency in processing while maintaining the highest level of quality in extraction products.
  • Reduce turnaround time for incoming work orders, while maintaining quality.
  • Adjust layout of working areas and working steps to maximize operational efficiency, integrate new equipment, or increase production capacity.

Data Tracking

  • Track manufacturing metrics throughout the extraction process.
  • Collect and interpret data to monitor and adjust daily operations for maximum output and quality.
  • Supervise feedstock preparation and packing.
  • Track post-processing temperatures and times to manipulate product as required.
  • Track consumables usage and maintain the manufacturing inventory.

Monitoring of Laboratory Equipment

  • Adhere to user manuals when available for scheduled maintenance and logging thereof.
  • For ethanol and hydrocarbon extractors: direct Extraction Technician to ensure safe assembly, inspection, and maintenance of high pressure clamping systems, stainless steel tubes, hoses, connections, sight glasses, valves, condensers, compression fittings, and pressure gauges.
  • Ensure seals and filters for TriClamp systems are maintained, inspected for defects, and replaced at regular intervals.
  • Replace desiccant beads and optimize water filtration from hydrocarbon gases.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance to the pumps and air compressors.
  • For vacuum pumps: maintain oil pumps with regular oil changes. Maintain cold traps for pump protection and schedule rebuilds when required.
  • For vacuum ovens: conform temperature and vacuum levels are consistent with monitoring devices. Maintain that ovens are cleaned and level.
  • For heater and chiller systems: monitor fluid levels and interpret faults, use approved fluids and maintain supply lines.
  • Monitor laboratory glassware and utensils for quantity and condition.
  • Maintain chemical storage area and inventory-usage logs.

Post Processing

  • Manipulate and refine crude extract as defined by UCG SOPs.
  • Limit or enhance cannabinoid crystallization to create different product types.
  • Understand thin film distillation theory, concepts, and practices.
  • Preserve terpenes and cannabinoids throughout all post processing steps.
  • Prioritize post processing tasks and fulfillment of work orders in a timely fashion.

Testing and Product Preparation

  • Prepare samples for testing and interpretation of test results to modify purging and extracting techniques in order to optimize product quality.
  • Communicate with testing laboratories.
  • Ensure product-type consistency and uniformity to prevent outliers.
  • Understand testing calibration.

Laboratory Safety

  • Emphasize safety in all laboratory activities, establishing working environments and techniques that minimize exposure to hazardous materials and vapors for all staff members.
  • Provide and maintain MSDS information for all laboratory chemicals, solvents, and gases.
  • Ensure employee safety and emergency training is conducted in regular intervals.

Job would require availability for temporary relocation to Spokane, WA for training.
