BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION:

Performs a wide variety of semi-skilled to skilled duties oriented towards the daily maintenance and repair for all UFA facilities, including fire stations, training tower and classrooms, logistics warehouse and Emergency Operations Center.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the direction of the Logistics Division Chief, reports directly to the Facilities Manager. Daily tasks are coordinated by the Facilities Manager. Work is reviewed at key stages or when unusual circumstances arise, to ensure compliance and consistency with UFA rules, policies, and procedures. Expected to function independently by using personal initiative to plan and carry out assignments and directing contract service vendors.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs semi-skilled to skilled duties related to construction, maintenance and repair at UFA fire stations, training facility, logistics warehouse, EOC and ancillary facilities, including carpentry, painting, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, locksmithing, welding, custodial and grounds keeping.
    • Assists journeyman level electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, etc. in trouble shooting and repairing building systems.
    • Coordinates with vendors for services such as pest control, sprinkler systems, weed removal, lawn care, etc. along with landscaping removal and/or replacement.
    • Maintains an inventory of buildings and grounds equipment and supplies.
    • Operates light and heavy fleet vehicles, operates, and maintains snow removal equipment, powered service equipment, grounds keeping equipment and tows various equipment and supply trailers.
    • Acts as the on-call Logistics Duty Officer on a 24-hour rotating schedule established by the Supply Staff Captain. This task involves providing support for fire crews operating on long term incidents by delivering specialized equipment to emergency scenes, purchasing, and delivering meals for extended incidents, coordinating emergency repairs to fire stations where circumstances warrant.
  • May respond to emergency situations or extended incidents as requested as part of coordinated Support Services response.
  • Promotes a high level of customer service and good public relations with internal and external clients.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level

TYPICAL DECISIONS:

Incumbents typically set their own priorities within assigned projects, relying on demonstrated experience and in-depth knowledge of building maintenance and repair techniques, purchasing protocols, vendor relations, equipment operation/maintenance/repair and general emergency vehicle operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Knowledge of construction materials, methods and maintenance needs.
  • Common hazards and general building and equipment safety precautions.
  • OSHA safety standards.
  • Basic computer skills and facility maintenance software programs

Skills (or Skill In):

  • Operation of hand tools and power equipment.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Ability to:

  • Analyze situations quickly and objectively while determining the proper course of action.
  • Meet expected deadlines and attain measurable performance results as defined by the Facilities Manager.
  • Maintain, update, and effectively utilize CMMS program
  • Operate general office equipment including computers, copiers, printers and scanners.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License
  • High School Diploma (or equivalent)
  • Two (2) years of experience in a field closely related to these duties OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Forklift Operator Certification (within one year of selection)
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening test

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Valid Commercial Driver's License
  • Current Facilities Maintenance certification(s)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a general office environment and in a field repair/remodel setting during routine office hours, Monday through Friday, however early morning meetings are required and after hours and weekend work is possible. Work activities vary widely including attendance at meetings, field repairs, classroom training, and driving. Work may include infrequent response to emergencies to assist with logistical duties.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL JOB REQUIREMENTS

To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential job functions satisfactorily. Incumbents may be subjected to dusts, gases, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel. This position also involves periods of prolonged sitting and use of computer equipment. This position requires the physical and mental capabilities to read information printed on paper and displayed on computer monitors; hear, speak, and communicate verbally using the English language; cognitive thinking and mathematical calculation capabilities; manual dexterity to manipulate standard office equipment, papers, files, and records. This position requires occasional driving and ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and up to 20 lbs. of force frequently and up to 10 lbs. of force constantly move objects.

Classified as FLSA Non-exempt and eligible for overtime
