Located in Scottsboro, Alabama, Unclaimed Baggage is a one-of-a-kind retail store that draws one million shoppers annually from all 50 states and around the world. As the country’s only merchant of unclaimed and lost airline baggage and its contents, Unclaimed Baggage offers a treasure trove of goods that airlines have been unable to reunite with their former owners. Besides clothing, footwear, formal wear and electronics, shoppers might find anything from a suit of armor and a 40-carat emerald to a Chinese dragon kite and a Jim Hensen life-size puppet.  The store has made national news in such media outlets as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, BuzzFeed, and NPR for its ever-changing array of unique items from around the world, all sold at an incredible value. In 2020, this family-owned business celebrated its 50th anniversary, and launched its first online store.

Unclaimed Baggage also runs a philanthropic program called Reclaimed for Good. The initiative provides charities with millions of dollars’ worth of repurposed clothes, medical supplies and equipment, such as wheelchairs. Reclaimed for Good’s Love Luggage initiative has also supported thousands of foster children by providing personalized suitcases to replace the garbage bags many typically use to transport their belongings.

Retail Store Manager Job Summary

The Unclaimed Baggage Retail Manager oversees day-to-day retail operations across all product categories and guest experience activities throughout it’s 40,000 square foot retail space, including Cups Café and the Guest Services team initiatives. Specific responsibilities include recruiting, training, and managing of all retail staff. Duties also involve analyzing daily sales, providing executive sales reports and developing and managing a budget. Optimizing space planning and working closely with Operations to manage inventory mix and levels that meet/exceed customer demands and revenue and profit goals is required. Additionally, the retail manager collaborates with the marketing team to develop campaigns that drive foot traffic and sales and provide a world class destination shopping experience. The Retail Manager reports to the Senior Director of Sales and Operations.Responsibilities
  • Lead a dynamic destination retail environment that includes a broad scope of products ranging from apparel, electronics, fine jewelry, and more, with a high level of guest engagement
  • Manage loss prevention
  • Achieve financial objectives by preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, maintaining financial records, analyzing variances and initiating remedial actions
  • Coordinate with Operations and Strategic Initiative teams to maintain optimal inventory levels across categories
  • Regularly update space management plans that achieve optimum dollars per square foot
  • Manage visual merchandizing to optimize the guest shopping experience and product appeal
  • Partner with the marketing team to develop a schedule of sales, promotions and holiday activities throughout the year strategically designed to drive store foot traffic and revenue
  • Ensure store and cafe compliance with health and safety regulations
  • Prepare detailed reports on buying trends, category sales performance, and guest demographics
  • Continually grow professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks and participating in professional societies
  • Recruit and hire quality, service-minded team members
  • Cultivate a culture consistent with the company faith, mission and values
  • Develop goals and monitor and appraise individual team member job performance
  • Support and improve performance results of individual team members through coaching, counseling, and correction
  • Provide ongoing training to improve the retail and merchandizing expertise of team members
  • Utilize cross-training methods to maintain productivity when employees are absent
  • Assign responsibility for the opening and closing of the store according to company protocols
  • Motivate the sales team to meet and exceed sales objectives through training, mentoring, recognizing and rewarding them
  • Deliver an excellent and continuously improving guest experience to ensure high levels of guest satisfaction, including creative and world-class hospitality efforts and unique guest experiences
  • Initiate strategic business ideas and concepts to attract new customers, increase store traffic, and enhance profitability
  • Respond to guest complaints and concerns in a professional manner

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration or related field preferred
  • 7+ years of retail management experience
