The University of North Texas at Dallas invites applications for the position of Student Services Assistant- ( Science Tutor).

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Participating in professional development opportunities that further knowledge in tutoring, science, student development, reporting, and supplemental instruction. and taking initiative to seek out professional development opportunities without prompting from supervisors.
  • Work with Learning Commons Staff and STEM faculty to develop and implement a Science Supplemental Instruction (SI) program.
  • Through the SI program, provide weekly (or biweekly) large group study sessions dedicated to specific courses including but not limited to Environmental Science, Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Provide input in developing and maintaining materials needed to demonstrate learning objective for Learning Commons in tutoring environment.
  • Assisting Learning Commons team with maintaining detailed student records; monitoring, inputting and analyzing data related to student attendance, persistence, retention, and satisfaction.
  • Serving as a liaison between the Learning Commons and UNT Dallas academic community (faculty and staff) by reaching out to faculty and gathering class information, syllabi, expectations, etc.; keeping instructors informed of the type of tutorial assistance his/her student received while in the center and sending reports of the sessions when necessary.
  • Organizing and developing reference material (handouts, workshops, custom workshops, videos, audio information, etc.) for the Learning Commons and the UNT Dallas community.
  • Helping promote the Learning Commons and services offered by developing positive relationships with campus community, developing marketing information, delivering presentations and classroom workshops around campus.
  • Collecting detailed and mandatory data on students' performance improvement as part of the assessment of the tutorial program.
  • Supporting Learning Commons Academic Program Manager with development of peer tutor training program and overseeing training of peer tutors as they are hired.
  • Work closely with faculty and the Academic Affairs division in the creation of the Sunset and Dallas Promise high school bridge programs and related science tutoring initiatives that support academic success.
  • Assist the Learning Commons Staff with other tasks as assigned (typing, emailing, answering phone, etc.) and on occasion managing the front desk.
  • Actively participating in staff meetings, occasionally leading staff meetings, and conducting meetings with Learning Commons Staff.
  • Supervising science peer tutors in tutoring strategies, student management, and resource development.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess the following required qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher with coursework in related field.
  • 0-1 years of previous tutoring experience.
  • Experience providing workshops, training, and/or test preparation sessions.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess a sincere desire to work with students strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and with others.
  • Ability to take direction and instruction without reservation.
Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM related field, or Science Education.
  • 1-3 years or prior experience tutoring in an academic setting; experience tutoring/teaching college students preferred.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and professionalism at all times.
  • Intermediate to advanced level of knowledge in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Physics.
  • Three to five years of related experience in a tutoring environment.
  • Demonstrate punctuality and professionalism at all times.
  • Strong knowledge of FERPA preferred.
  • Ability to utilize computer technology to access data, maintain records, and generate reports.
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
  • Ability to assist with instructional support in mathematics and statistics.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak Spanish (strong knowledge of Spanish grammar, spelling, and style) highly encouraged but not required.
Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions
  • Work is primarily sedentary. Sits comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking, standing, bending, or lifting items weighing up to 15 pounds.
Work Schedule
  • Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m., Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm, Sunday 2:00pm-6:00p, and other times as necessary.
