Job Title: Director, Operations
Department/Division: Institute for Capacity Building (ICB)

The Director of Operations will play a key role in the work of UNCF’s Institute for Capacity. In this role, the Director will be responsible for the development and the implementation of ICBs efforts to establish, support, and engage various programmatic, operational, and learning activities across the UNCF network of partnering institutions. The Director will oversee the day-to-day activities of the team, ensuring that the team is managed and performing efficiently and effectively.
The successful candidate will join a team seeking to partner with HBCUs and PBIs to ensure their sustainability by increase the institution’s effectiveness, competitiveness, and viability. This position will require an individual that is both collaborative and entrepreneurial. The individual selected for this position must possess a deep understanding of higher education, curriculum design, and professional development programming and Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF), the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization, has been an engine of minority educational achievement for more than 70 years. UNCF’s mission is to build a robust and nationally recognized pipeline of black students who, because of UNCF support, become highly qualified college graduates. In addition, UNCF ensures that its member institutions remain respected models of best practices in moving students to and through college. Since its inception in 1944, UNCF has raised over $4.5 billion in private support, distributed more scholarships to help minorities attend school than any entity outside of the federal government, and enabled more than 425,000 minority and low-income students to graduate from UNCF’s member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and launch professional careers. UNCF is committed to closing the educational attainment gap between African Americans and other populations by increasing postsecondary access and success for students from underrepresented groups, particularly low-income and first-generation students.
Launched in 2006, UNCF’s Institute for Capacity Building (ICB) provides targeted capacity-building resources to help HBCUs improve their resilience. We define resilience as the institution’s ability to improve its operation today and future-proof them for tomorrow. ICB’s engagement equips UNCF member institutions, and other HBCUs and PBIs, to provide high-quality educational experiences to their students and the broader Black community. ICB’s work focuses on three areas critical to HBCU success: institutional effectiveness, academic competitiveness, and financial viability. Beyond our strategic advisory and project management support, ICB serves as an innovation hub for Black colleges, connecting institutions to funders, best practices, resources, and subject matter experts both within and outside of UNCF.
Successful candidates will join the Institute for Capacity Building team which is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. In addition to specific roles and responsibilities, ICB team members have proven to be successful when they:

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
The Director reports to the Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Institutional Programs. S/he will have the following key responsibilities:
- Design, lead, manage, monitor projects to implement and improve CRM-related needs for ICB and its various programs and stakeholders.
- Must have working knowledge of Salesforce
- Establishes quantitative and qualitative metrics, guidelines, and standards by which the ICB team’s efficiency and effectiveness can be evaluated; identifies opportunities for improvement.
- Reviews, analyzes, and evaluates business procedures.
- Implements policies and procedures that will improve day-to-day operations.
- Ensures work environments are adequate and safe.
- Oversees purchasing and equipment procurement, ensuring team members have the supplies they need to be effective.
- Plans, directs, controls, implements, evaluates, monitors, and forecasts budgets and expenditures across all grants and programs.
- Communicates and explains new directives, policies, or procedures to directors and managers; for major changes, meets with entire ICB team to explain changes, answer questions, and maintain morale.
- Improves customer service and satisfaction through policy and procedural changes.
- Leads coordination and integration of ICB efforts across programs to produce smoother workflow and more effective operations.
- Participates in the hiring and training of ICB team members.
- Organizes and oversees the work and schedules of the ICB team.
- Conducts performance evaluations that are timely and constructive.
Candidates should have:
- Extensive knowledge of CRM systems, data structures, reporting and use.
- Proven project management skills.
- Ability to forge strong relationships with virtual teams.
- Strong executive and CRM community presence and able to deal comfortably with different levels of leadership
- Thorough understanding of practices, theories, and policies involved in business and finance.
- Superior verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Superior managerial and diplomacy skills.
- Extremely proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- An outstanding record of academic and professional achievement
- Strong ability to communicate both verbally and in writing

- Bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree or terminal degree is strongly preferred
- 7-10 years of relevant work experience is required

Salary Range: $79,000.00 - $89,000.00
