# Position Information
## Position Summary
The Director of Communications in the School of Nursing is responsible for operational and strategic planning regarding public relations, marketing and internal/external communications. As the School's lead communications officer, the Director of Communications is the principal external affairs official for the School responsible for strengthening awareness and support of its mission. In conjunction with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Office of Communications and Public Affairs, the Director of Communications plans, organizes, and directs public relations efforts for the School in accordance with the Dean of the School of Nursing at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
## Educational Requirements
Master's Degree or Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of 5 years related experience.
## Qualifications and Experience
The Director of Communication is a specialist in university external relations who knows and understands the nature and purpose of nursing education, research, practice, administration, leadership, and health policy advocacy. Public relations experience in a college or university setting as well as experience in marketing, and communications are essential. Other qualifications include strong health care journalism experience, knowledge of North Carolina, knowledge of research, education, and practice activities relevant to healthcare, ability to interact effectively in a comprehensive, research university setting, employment history highlighted by major responsibilities and a demonstrative ability to exercise sensitivity and good judgment, and exceptional written and oral communication skills, particularly with scientific audiences.
