Director of Culinary Enterprise

Position Description:

We are seeking an experienced and collaborative Director of Culinary Enterprises (DCE) to provide leadership, technical skill, and day-to-day management in the organization's goal of using social enterprise to change lives. Reporting to the Chief Strategy Officer, the DCE is responsible for combining business and mission strategies to grow UMOM's Culinary enterprises while delivering on the double bottom line of profit & purpose. This position is responsible for the direct supervision of the Social Enterprise, Homegrown Training, and Residential Dining Management Teams. This position works in partnership with the entire Senior Leadership team to support all of UMOM's culinary training and foodservice efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Strategy and Operations:

  1. Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Social Enterprise, Homegrown Training, and Residential Dining Departments, including budget oversight, forecasting, and variance report review.
  2. Supervise the Social Enterprise, Homegrown Training, and Residential Dining management staff; including training, direction of work, appraisal of productivity and efficiency, delivery of feedback and coaching, and disciplinary action, if required
  3. Collaborate alongside senior leadership team to provide strategic approaches to culinary training and foodservice operations and initiatives.

Social Enterprises

  1. Direct UMOM's social enterprise operations to create positive customer experiences, profitable enterprises, and mission driven training programs that align with UMOM's vision for social enterprise.
  2. Design business strategies for social enterprises to grow their revenue, increase profitability, and expand their business lines.
  3. Lead the expansion of social enterprises as a revenue stream to help offset the operational expenses of UMOM.

Homegrown Training

  1. Design & implement systems for recruitment, curriculum development, and student evaluation for Homegrown Training programs
  2. Build a network of businesses to support the graduates of Homegrown Training program with obtaining jobs & resources
  3. Establish and monitor training standards for all components of Homegrown Training
  4. Coordinate celebrations for Homegrown Training graduates that is client focused but also helps publicly tell UMOM's story

Residential Dining:

  1. Develop relationships with vendors to insure that UMOM is getting the best food products for the lowest price and leveraging the buying power of UMOM's client food budget
  2. Work with the Residential Manager to use donated food at each site to offset the cost of purchasing food
  3. Supervise menu development used at all UMOM New Day Center's residential dining sites to reflect portion control, nutritional needs, and compliance requirements
  4. Serve as the main point of contact for contractual compliance related to food service, relationships with partner food rescue organizations, in-kind food donations, and act as authority on all food service-related training.
  5. Manage and maintain the Child and Adult Care Food Program contracts and regulations and ensure all requirements are met for food service related to the Child Development Center
  6. Calculate food costs with each menu used at UMOM New Day Centers residential dining sites to maximize efficiency of food budget while meeting the nutrition needs of UMOM clients.

Qualification and Competency Requirements:

Experience and Education:

  • Minimum 7 years of professional experience, with at least 5 years of experience in relevant roles (e.g. foodservice operations, culinary instruction, business development, hospitality and/or education leadership positions) required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of supervisory experience required.
  • Bachelor's degree required-Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working in hospitality field is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of non-profit/social sector; experience working with underserved or disadvantaged populations is a plus.
  • High proficiency in effective writing and communication.
  • Ability to develop strong relationships within a fast-paced, collaborative setting that values diverse opinions; enthusiasm for helping drive change as UMOM becomes a more data-driven organization.

Computer skills:

  • Proficiency with applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and Outlook


  • ServSafe Food Manager certification or equivalent certification.
  • Valid AZ Driver's license with no more than 2 moving violations in a one-year period required.
  • Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card or the ability to obtain one required.
  • 100/300 level auto coverage insurance required.
