### Summary

The Assistant Secretary is a permanent staff member in the Judge's
chambers and works closely with the Paralegal to ensure that the
office runs smoothly. A successful candidate must have a pleasant
and positive attitude and be able to work well in a small office
environment with a diverse and frequently changing staff of law
clerks.

### Responsibilities

The Assistant Secretary manages case files from open to close,
including filing, organizing calendar materials, acquiring court
records, shipping materials, preparing Bench Books, and preparing
and circulating reports based on current data. Duties will include
proofreading memorandum dispositions and opinions, including use of
proper grammar and legal citations, and preparing simple orders for
the Judge's review and the ultimate filing of orders, memorandum
dispositions, and opinions with the Clerk. Travel with the judge to
provide secretarial support while on calendar to Pasadena and San
Francisco and at times to Seattle, Honolulu, and Anchorage, and
other court locations will also be encouraged.

- U.S. citizen or a permanent resident in the process of applying

### Qualifications

- Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree from an
accredited college or university preferred but not required.
- Two years of secretarial or legal processing experience.
- A strong legal, administrative, or paralegal background.
Excellent command of English grammar and spelling.
- Excellent organizational, communication, and administrative
skills. Computer proficiency with word processing, email, legal
research, and database maintenance.
- Proficiency with making travel arrangements and submitting
expense reports.
- Ability to work collegially in a small working environment.
- Integrity, character, and good judgment.

\*Salary: Depending on qualifications and experience:
- For grade JS 8: 2 years of general clerical work experience,
plus 3 years of specialized work experience (legal, paralegal or
law office work)\*\*
- For grade JS 9: 1 additional year of specialized work
experience.\*\*
- For grade JS 10: 2 additional years of specialized work
experience.\*\*

\*\*A college degree may be substituted for general work experience;
legal or paralegal training may be substituted for up to 2 years of
specialized work experience.

Total Rewards:

- Salary: depending on qualifications and experience,
$49,576-$78,386 (JSP Grade 8 - 10);
