Summary
About the Position: This position serves as a paraprofessional
member of the surgical team at the Tripler Army Medical Center
performing scrub and/or Operating Room duties. Oahu is the third
largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Honolulu is the state capitol
and the 11th largest U.S. Metropolitan city. Waikiki, the most world
renowned site in Oahu, is the top visitor destination of the state.
The island is very diverse with mountains, rainforests, volcanic
craters, beaches and much more.

Responsibilities
  • Transports patients from hospital units to the Operating Room
assuring safe transportation of the patient.
  • As a scrub technician, maintains a sterile environment, selects,
assembles, and organizes required supplies, equipment,
instruments and tools for specific surgical procedure.
  • As a circulator, obtains sterile supplies, sutures, dressings,
linens, etc., for the specific procedure; opens instrument sets,
pours solutions, sets up and adjust equipment makes suction
connections and adjusts operating lights.
  • Removes gross contamination, soil, blood, tissue fragments, body
fluids by wiping, soaking, rinsing, scrubbing, and operates
various kind of equipment such as ultrasonic cleaner and washer
sterilizers.

  • Childcare background check required for this position. Employees
must obtain and maintain a favorable result from a Criminal
History Background Check as a condition of employment.

96, which requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B
Immunization unless exempted by a physician.
  • Requires a current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and
certification from the American Heart Association or Red Cross/
Military Training Network. (Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
does not substitute for BLS.)
  • May be required to work evenings/nights; rotating shifts,
extended hours, weekends, holidays or other schedules common to
hospital operations. Shifts include; Day (0645-1515); Evening
(1445-2315); Night (2245-0715).
  • Employee may be required to wear and use personal protective
equipment as required and provided by the employer.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination
requirement therefore the incumbent is subject to annual
seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to
applicant testing and random drug testing for incumbents.
  • A pre-appointment physical may be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience
requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid
experience, including volunteer work done through National Service
programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations
(e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community;
student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying
experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly
describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education,
your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (GS-5): One year of specialized
experience which includes 1) Working with surgical instruments,
supplies and equipment; 2) Implementing sterile techniques, and; 3)
Applying knowledge of aseptic techniques. This definition of
specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next
lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (GS-5):Four year course
of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at
least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the
position, such as, Surgical Nursing.
OR
COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (GS-5): A combination of
education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as
long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least
100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your
total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of
education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.
Add the two percentages.
**Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the
required experience in order to qualify. For this job at the GS-06
and above level, you must meet the qualification requirement using
experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is
permitted.**
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (GS-6): One year of specialized
experience which includes: 1) Preparing and handling instruments,
supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures; 2) Practicing
aseptic techniques, and; 3) Assisting Operating Room personnel with
operating room suite functions (e.g. Operating Room set-up, surgical
procedures, post-surgery instrument decontamination). This
definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at
the next lower grade/level position in the federal service
(GS-05).
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE (GS-7): One year of specialized
experience which includes: 1) Planning and discussing each procedure
with the surgical team to assure all supplies and equipment are
available for surgery; 2) Assisting surgeon(s) during operation; 3)
Recognizing and responding to critical situations, including
emergency and life threatening conditions, and; 4) Assists with
training or orientation of new employees in an operating room
environment and/or assists operating room staff to explain surgical
procedures and requirements (e.g. explaining surgical instruments,
aseptic procedures, new technology and/or equipment). This
definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at
the next lower grade/level position in the federal service
(GS-06).

Education
