Reporting to the Process Engineering Manager, the Fire Protection Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert to establish and manage design specifications and reliability practices for fire and explosion controls for the prevention and mitigation of fire and explosion hazards. The scope of this role will span a growing number of multiple pellet mill manufacturing plants. This position will play a key role in buildout of Enviva's Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS).
- Using the Four Pillars of our Operational Discipline and Operational Excellence Management System (OEMS) framework this position is responsible for (4) key deliverables
- Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) development for all facilities to assess fire and explosion hazards and identify design, engineering, and administrative controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards.
- Design and engineering specifications development and managed to ensure that controls necessary to prevent, detect, suppress and mitigate the impacts of fire and explosions, are implemented consistently across Enviva's current and future facilities.
- Proactive maintenance and reliability strategies development and deployment to ensure that design and engineering controls for fire and explosion hazards are effective and reliable
- Establish metrics and key performance indicators related to fire prevention and explosion hazards to assess effectiveness, and drive continuous improvement of design and engineering controls for fire and explosion hazards.
- Develop, document, deploy, maintain, and continuously improve design and engineering specifications for equipment and controls necessary to prevent, detect, suppress, and mitigate the impact of fire and explosion hazards.
- Facilitate and maintain Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) to assess the risks and identify controls for mitigating fire and explosion hazards.
- Develop, document, deploy, maintain, and continuously improve proactive maintenance and reliability strategies for equipment and controls necessary to prevent, detect, suppress, and mitigate the impact of fire and explosion hazards
- Facilitate problem solving and root cause investigations related to fire prevention and equipment with local maintenance, plant engineering, EHS, regional engineering and maintenance personnel.
- Lead Enviva's Fire Prevention Best Practice team (cross functional team with local champions - representation from each site across the enterprise). Implement successes across sites as well as lessons learned.
- Define/capture fire event failure modes and process interruptions related to equipment design and application within the sites. Use historical data to drive future improvements.
- Develop relationships with key vendors of equipment and services related to the prevention, detection, suppression, and mitigation of fire and explosion hazards.
- Support facilities in the development of Emergency Response Plans for fires and explosions and evaluate the effectiveness of plans through periodic drills
- Bachelor's degree in fire protection engineering or similar safety discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in a high hazard industry involving the manufacture of process safety chemicals or combustible dust.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the application of problem solving tools such as cause mapping, fault tree analysis, and DMAIC
- Experience conducting Process Hazard Analysis, Combustible Dust Hazard Analysis, Failure Modes Effects Analysis or pro-active risk identification and assessment methodologies
- Knowledge of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards
- Knowledge of, and experience applying, advanced maintenance and reliability concepts, strategies, techniques, and tools including:
- Job planning and scheduling
- Condition Based Monitoring (CBM)
- Reliability Centered Maintenance
- The P-F Curve
- Ultrasonic, vibration, thermal, and other non-destructive testing/monitoring techniques
- Ability to apply basic statistical analysis tools such as probability distributions, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, and linear regression
- Knowledge of concepts related to fire and explosions such LFL/UFL, minimum explosive concentration, minimum energy for ignition, pyrolysis, and flame propagation.
- Knowledge of equipment utilized for the prevention, detection, suppression, and mitigation of fire and explosion hazards including spark, thermal, and gas detection equipment, water and chemical suppression and isolation systems, application of nitrogen, carbon dioxide and other inert gases, and explosion venting
- Working knowledge of NFPA 68 & 69
- Knowledge of equipment and techniques for fighting industrial fires
- Must be data-driven and possess a high level of attention to detail.
- Working knowledge of industrial electrical, mechanical and controls systems
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and team leadership skills.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint with the ability to learn other applications related to the job.
- Must be a self-starter with ability to prioritize workload.
- Master's degree in fire protection engineering or safety related field
- 5 years' experience in a wood products processing industry
- Advanced knowledge of NFPA 652 Standard on the Fundamentals of Combustible Dust and NFPA 664 Standard for the Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and Woodworking Facilities
- Experience with multiple mechanical, electrical and controls systems
- Proficiency in CAD software (preferably AutoCAD or Solidworks).
- Knowledge of controls engineering
- Ability to read PLC logic a plus
- Six Sigma Certification (GB or BB) a plus
- Lean/Continuous Improvement experience.
- First-year 80%, after between 80% and 25% (project dependent)
