**JOB SUMMARY:**A Respiratory Therapist functions within the healthcare team as a professional caregiver who provides quality care to patients and their families. Services provided include assessment, treatment, management, rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities which affect the cardiopulmonary system and associated aspects of other system functions. This involves the application and analysis of respiratory care as it applies to clinical data, equipment, and therapeutic procedures. The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) is a resource to the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and may be required to function as a clinical leader when clinical and/or operational needs arise.
Education: Graduate of an accredited school of Respiratory Care. Minimum of a two-year Associate's Degree in Respiratory Care or its academic equivalent as recognized by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Job Knowledge: Utilizes critical thinking skills for complex problem solving. Is able to review related information to develop and evaluate options and solutions.
Experience: Expertise in use of medical gases, administering apparatus, humidification and aerosols, administration of drugs and medications to the cardio respiratory systems, ventilator assistance and ventilatory control, postural drainage, chest physiotherapy and breathing exercises, respiratory rehabilitation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and maintenance of natural airways as well as the insertion and maintenance of artificial airways.
Expertise in testing techniques used in respiratory care to assist in diagnosis, monitoring treatment and research. Include the application, monitoring and measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures and flows, specimen collection of blood and other materials, pulmonary function testing and hemodynamics and other related physiological monitoring of cardiopulmonary systems.
Education for patients, families and general public to promote knowledge of disease process, therapies, self-help, cardiopulmonary wellness and disease prevention.
Licensure: Licensed by the state of Connecticut.
Certification: Credentialed by the NBRC; for all new hires after July 1, 2014, holds Registered Respiratory Therapist Credential (RRT) BLS, ACLS, NRP within 6 months
Job Skills: Job requires independent problem identification, abstract reasoning and adaptability to varied environments and information, quick decision-making is required. A high degree of selective attention discernment, perception, and/or concentration is necessary.

**PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORT: **Job requires standing and/or walking for long periods, up to one hundred fifty minutes or more at a time with infrequent sitting. Overhead reaching, squatting and kneeling are occasionally required. Bending and forward reaching are frequently required to access equipment from high to low areas. Lifting greater then seventy five pounds is occasionally required for patient repositioning. Pushing objects greater than sixty pounds is frequently required for patient transfer. Fine manipulation is required for patient care and ventilator management, also for writing and computer usage.
**ENVIRONMENTAL AND WORKING CONDITIONS: **Job requires working continuously around others or working alone on a frequent basis. Occasionally required are emergency response, working in crowded spaces and frequent exposure to body fluids/blood borne pathogens. Flexibility in scheduling, weekends holidays and hours are required.
