Ultrasound Technologist

Job Summary:

Under the direction of the Radiologist; independently performs a variety of routine and complex ultrasound procedures for the purpose of diagnosing abnormalities.

Essential Functions and Duties:

Performs a wide variety of complex ultrasound examinations such as; pelvic sono, biophysical profile, ob sono, abdomen, kidney, breast, testicular, thyroid and color-flow Doppler studies of veins and carotid arteries. Reviews request from physicians and determine the appropriate procedure and equipment necessary to obtain the desired images. Receives positions and explains procedures in order to secure maximum cooperation. Selects, sets up, adjusts and operates ultrasound equipment. If unanticipated conditions or anomalies are discovered, extends and modifies procedure to insure full and accurate imaging of finding. Observes and reports patient responses to instructions, movement, touch, etc. if significant. Monitors patient condition during examination and if necessary renders emergency aid. Assist radiologist or physician in evaluating findings. Assists in performance of invasive procedures such as needle guided biopsies and aspirations. Assists in determining fix point of entry, depth and direction of penetration and location within the body. Locates disease sites, identify position, function and/or response of organs. Performs operator level maintenance and care of equipment. Establishes and maintains a variety of files and records relating to ultrasound activities and functions. Prepares reports on examinations, equipment status, utilization, workload, supply status and other related matters. Performs duties of Radiology Technologist and Mammography Technologist if certified to do so.

Position Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited radiology program
  • Certified or pursing certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers )
  • Certified to perform radiology by the American Registry of Radiology Technologist
  • Licensed to perform radiology in Illinois by the Illinois State Department of Nuclear Safety
  • Certified to perform cardio-pulmonary resuscitation

Function—Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of routine and complex ultrasound examinations
  • Prepare patient for procedures, including providing instructions to obtain desired results, gain cooperation and minimize anxiety
  • Corroborate patient's clinical history with procedure ensuring information is documented
  • Select and operated ultrasound equipment and associated devices to achieve desired results
  • Position patient and equipment to best demonstrate anatomic area of interest respecting patient ability and comfort
  • Determine ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area interest.
  • Evaluate images for technical quality ensuring proper identification is recorded
  • Assist licensed practitioners with interventional procedures such as needle localization, aspirations, biopsies and amniocentesis
  • Assume responsibility for physical and psychological needs of the patient during procedures
  • Initiate basic life support action when necessary
  • Assist in maintaining records while respecting confidentiality
  • Assume responsibility for assigned area and report equipment malfunctions
  • Responsible for control of inventory and care of specific ultrasound items
  • Practice aseptic technique and observe universal precautions
  • Provide on-call coverage for Medical Surgical Floor, Labor & Delivery and Emergency Department
  • Promote customer service as part of CPR ( Caring, Professionalism and Respect )
