Job Summary:

To initiate and implement infection control standards throughout the hospital, and to maintain and oversee the Employee Health and Infection Control Program.

Job Relationships:

Under the direction of the Chairperson of the Infection Control Committee and Chief Nursing

Officer but not limited to the following staff:

  • Physicians - Human Resources - Housekeeping
  • Nursing - Social Services - Home Health
  • Utilization review - Facilities - Laboratory
  • Pharmacy - Accounting - Radiology
  • Education Dept. - Material Management

Participates in:

  • Performance/Continuous Quality Improvement (departmental level, hospital wide)
  • Multidisciplinary Program
  • Community immunization programs
  • Hazardous waste management
  • Safety Program


The Infection Control Coordinator has direct responsibility for the activities and functions of the

Employee Health/ Infection Control Department. Position reports to Chief Nursing Officer and is

accountable to the Infection Control Chairperson.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive other duties may be required and assigned. The following is a summary of the major essential responsibilities of this position. The incumbent may perform other duties as assigned and specific functions may change from time to time.

1. Shares responsibility for the overall function of the Employee Health/ Infection Control Department.

2. Assist in recruitment, interviewing and selection of department staff.

3. Responsible for completing evaluations for each staff member.

4. Counsels employees, develop staff and as appropriate utilizes disciplinary process.

5. Develops, maintains and updates hospital infection control policies and Employee Health requirements.

6. Prepares a quarterly report by month of statistical data for the Infection Control Committee. The report is timely and in accordance with the Infection Control guidelines.

7. Report to the Local and/or County Health department and report any diseases as established by Illinois state law and regulations of the county health department. Work with the health department in complying with any problems related to outbreak and control of communicable diseases. Pertinent information is reported to the Health department in a timely and accurate manner.

8. Conducts systematic on-going organization-wide surveillance with priority directed targeted surveillance. This includes reviewing charts to determine the presence of postop or nosocomial infections.

9. Provides follow-up on all employee exposures including, investigation, lab result evaluation for employee, collaborates with physician of source patient, administration of Hepatitis vaccinations and continued follow up according to our exposure/sharps policy.

10. Makes frequent rounds of patient care units and assists where possible in solving problems and concerns.

11. Participates in the formulations and revisions of hospital policies and/or procedures related to infection control.

12. Review microbiology reports for pathogens that have been isolated by culture.

13. Exercise authority in putting into action such control measures as isolation and corrective actions when any severe breaks in technique occur requiring prompt remedial action. Corrective discipline is initiated where needed in accordance with the infection.

14. Communicate problems and suggest solutions.

15. Act as a consultant to nursing and medical staff concerning infection control of employee health matters. Recommendations are made as how methods, procedures and quality can be improved.

16. Conducts and assist in inservice training related to infection prevention and control ,employee health, OSHA, and hazardous waste.

17. Keep abreast of current trends and development. Recommendations are made as to how methods, procedures and quality may be improved through these developments.

18. To interpret policies and procedures concerning infection control and employee health to staff.

19. Assist staff in preventing unnecessary complication in-patient care by increasing knowledge of disease entities and work with other discipline to plan multiplinary inservice programs.

20. Effective communication is evident throughout the hospital with the evidence of ongoing interaction with all disciplines.

21. Assist the staff in becoming aware of community resources and to provide a bridge in communication between hospital and community agencies. Actively participate with community resources and communicates pertinent information.

22. Participates in Infection Control and Safety meetings. Participates in the Multidisciplinary meeting held weekly and other ad hoc committees as assigned. Participates in nursing service work groups.

23. Maintains confidentiality of information

24. Maintains sense of personal satisfaction by seeking out new learning experiences

25. Assumes responsibility for maintaining optimal nursing practice by utilizing educational resources of the hospital, nursing literature and professional development to improve performance.

26. Participates in the hospital QA/PI program

27. Maintains operating and capital budget for the Employee Health and Infection Control department.

28. Recommends the staffing pattern of qualified and competent persons to support the functions of the department.

29. Aid in the selection and purchase of equipment related to infection control.

Training, Education and Experience:

The following qualifications or equivalents are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of nursing with an Illinois license, BSN required, along with a BLS and "Infection Control & Epidemiology I: An Introduction" certification.
  • Minimum Experience: Minimum Five years clinical nursing experience
  • Knowledge or experience in basic epidemiology preferred.
  • Must be knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures
  • Excellent communication, organizational and teaching skills required.
