Job Description

Timberland Bank is seeking an experienced Full-Time Residential Loan Underwriter with 2 years of underwriting experience.

Summary/Objective:

  • Examines, evaluates and makes recommendations on loan files for residential real estate and construction loans for portfolio and agency products. This position may have limited loan approval authority

Essential Job Functions (Reasonable accommodations will be provided upon request)

  • Extensive knowledge of all secondary market and portfolio lending guidelines and policies.
  • Analyzes loan files regarding applicant’s financial status, creditworthiness and property appraisals to determine feasibility of granting loan; approves or makes recommendation for approval or denial and submits to Loan Committee.
  • Maintains open and effective communications between loan officers, loan processors and Loan Committee members to resolve loan file challenges and conditions.
  • Provides quality control of loan files: verifies accuracy and completion of all required loan documentation using compliance and underwriting guidelines.
  • Answers inquiries regarding loan processing or underwriting information with processors, loan officers, loan closers, loan servicing and quality control.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

Education / Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum two+ years experience as a loan underwriter including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
  • Experience and/or training with computer systems, preferably desktop or other automated processing and underwriting systems.
  • Excellent knowledge of loan applications, products and services.
  • Ability to communicate and listen effectively in a diplomatic manner.
  • Possess problem solving and creative thinking abilities. Recognize the sensitivity and confidentiality of the information being reviewed.
  • Able to work under deadlines and fluctuating work loads.
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized, able to prioritize tasks and work well with limited supervision.
  • Must remain current on all regulatory, bank policies and secondary market guidelines and industry changes.
  • Willingness to continue professional education through meetings, seminars, formal training or correspondence courses.

  • Ability to speak, read, and hear.
  • Ability to read and understand technical/professional material.
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting.

Physical Demands:

  • Work may involve the constant use of computer screens, reading of reports, and sitting throughout the day.
  • Ability to operate a computer keyboard, multi-line telephone, photocopier, scanner and facsimile which often requires dexterity of hands and fingers with repetitive wrist and hand motion.
  • Typically sitting at a desk or table; intermittently standing, stooping, bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to file materials.
  • Occasional lifting 10-20 lbs. (e.g., files, boxes, handouts).
