This position is based in our Asheville, NC site. **How will you make an impact?** In this role, the Packaging Engineer III, reporting to the Packaging Engineering Manager, will be responsible for leading packaging development projects across the Laboratory Products Division (LPD). This individual will be empowered to design, test, analyze, and select materials for new packaging and analyze current packaging for improvement opportunities. This role will collaborate with various LPD manufacturing facilities to improve all existing product packaging, address quality issues, develop and direct industry standard distribution testing (ISTA, ASTM, etc.), and drive the implementation of packaging development projects throughout the division. The individual will engage internal resources and packaging suppliers to optimize packaging for customer experience, quality, manufacturing compatibility, and costs, with the ultimate goal of bringing world-class packaging to Thermo Fisher Scientific. **What will you do?** + Lead packaging projects from data collection to implementation to drive packaging optimization and cost savings for existing products. + Develop innovative customer and quality-focused packaging for a wide variety of laboratory equipment products. + Drive long-term sustained packaging success by creating standards for packaging designs and practices across product lines and manufacturing facilities. + Collaborate with team members from Sourcing, Quality, Finance, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Optimization Engineering, R&D, Environmental Health and Safety, and others to ensure business alignment and proper input for packaging development. + Work with various packaging suppliers to develop cutting-edge packaging and select packaging materials with a focus on sustainability and innovation. + Address quality issues related to packaging, including freight damage and customer complaints. + Support in the implementation of packaging projects by following projects through the Global Existing Product Change process (GEPC), First Article Inspection (FAI), and other processes related to engineering changes. + Produce documentation for project reviews and approvals, including preparing project plans, test reports, and presentations for management and Change Review Board (CRB) review. **How will you get here?** + Bachelor's Degree in Packaging Engineering required + Master's Degree in Packaging Engineering preferred **Experience:** + 5+ years' experience working with packaging components (with a Bachelor's) required + 3+ years' experience working with packaging components (with a Master's) required + 2 years' experience within the medical device, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology industry preferred + 2 years' experience working within a manufacturing environment preferred **Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:** + The candidate must have excellent time management and communication skills. + The ability to travel internationally and domestically <15%. + The ability to work independently, deal with ambiguity, and confidence to drive projects forward. + Demonstrated proficiency in Package design, specifically corrugate, wood, plastics, and foam. Shock and vibration packaging a plus. + Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office suite required. + Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to educate colleagues and customers of packaging justification, improvement opportunities, and best practices. This includes being comfortable presenting to large groups and management. + Working knowledge of 3D modeling software, such as Artios or AutoCAD with the ability to read and understand technical drawings. Drawing proficiency is preferred, but not required. + Demonstrated excellent follow-through both with daily workload and long-term projects, operating autonomously with minimal guidance. + Possess and understanding of workload and be able to self-prioritize. + Possess the ability to be actively involved in trouble-shooting packaging concerns by interacting with internal and external teams. + Be interested in career growth and motivated by success and performance.
