Position Title: Dental Assistant or Expanded Function Dental Assistant

Salary: $18 per hour+, DOE; ($19 per hour+ for EFDA)

Status/Hours: Non-exempt, 40 hours per week

Reports to: Dental Director


Our dental assistants are an integral part of the Wallace dental team. They support our dentists, hygienists, and dental students in providing high-quality oral healthcare and education to a broad range of patients. They also assist where needed to ensure smooth, efficient running of the dental program and participate in ongoing evaluation of operations to assure delivery of outstanding patient care and clinic financial sustainability.

All Dental Assistants:

  • Prepare and maintain dental instruments, supplies and equipment, including taking inventory and reordering as necessary
  • Maintain proper aseptic techniques necessary with dental equipment; clean and properly sterilize instruments and record all sterilization activities
  • Help manage the dental office infection control plan to meet OSHA, CDC and ADA standards
  • Prepare the operatory for patient visits, including cleaning, disinfecting and restocking the room
  • Scan reception room for patients and helps to manage patient flow
  • Seat patient in chair and explain procedures to be performed, collecting and recording patient health history
  • Drape patient with protective linens and sets up instrument tray containing instruments, suction, gauze and other required supplies
  • Prepare dental materials (cements, amalgams, composites, impression materials, etc.)
  • Assist with dental charting as appropriate
  • Assist in the prevention and management of dental emergencies
  • Manage the patient during dental procedures
  • Provide active chairside assistance; transfer instruments as appropriate for four-handed dentistry; anticipate the dentist’s needs
  • At the conclusion of the procedure, assist patient, clear work site of instruments and other materials; follow proper infection control protocols and prepare the operatory for the next patient
  • Monitor and documents the flow of laboratory cases; maintain lab facility
  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations, cooperating with the Wallace compliance program
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives
  • Participate in health literacy events, volunteer retention, and related activities
  • Respond professionally to high-pressure situations, time limits, and changes
  • Maintain patient confidentiality
  • Work collaboratively and professionally at all levels
  • Maintain and expand dental assistant skills and knowledge by attending continuing education programs
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Additional Responsibilities for EFDAs:

  • Take and prepares radiographs using conventional or digital technology and following proper radiation safety precautions (requires specific certification in Oregon)
  • Apply topical fluoride and varnishes, and pit and fissure sealants
  • Polish coronal surfaces of patient’s teeth (without high-speed instruments) to remove stains/soft deposits and polishes amalgams or composite surfaces
  • Fabricate, preliminarily fit and remove temporary crowns for final cementation; place temporary restorative materials and remove excess cement from fabricated restorations
  • Take impressions for study casts, athletic mouth guards and custom trays
  • Perform laboratory procedures neatly and efficiently
  • Pours models with no bubbles, properly trim models, polish dental prostheses, and make vac-u-press forms


  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Completion of an accredited dental assisting program and/or equivalent experience as a dental assistant
  • Current DA certification from the Oregon Board of Dentistry / DANB with radiological proficiency, or ability to obtain certification within 90 days from hire
  • CPR / BLS certification
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and institutional regulations and guidelines for the provision of dental outpatient services
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to provide exceptional customer service and patient education
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to show respect, kindness, and compassion to all patients, staff, volunteers, and associates
  • Strong computer skills

  • At least one year of experience as a dental assistant
  • Prior experience at community health center / working with patients who experience barriers to healthcare (such as poverty, language, mental illness, unstable housing, etc.)


Work is performed primarily in a clinic/office setting with some time spent in the community or on a mobile medical van, between the hours of 7:30 AM - 6 PM, Monday through Friday. Moderate physical activity is required (with or without reasonable accommodation) with the ability to handle objects up to 20 pounds, assist patients with standing/walking.

Reading fine print and communicating in person, writing (including email), and by telephone are required.

Due to the clinical environment and nature of the position, the work involves exposure to unusual elements such as unpleasant odors, loud noises, potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions, and may include the use of protective equipment.

OSHA training for bloodborne pathogens is provided.
