Job Title: Human Resources Manager

Location: Uptown Academy (931 W. Eastwood, Chicago, IL 60640)

Start date: ASAP

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Organization Overview

​The People's Music School (TPMS) is a 42-year old institution that has brought the transformative benefits of music to over 10,000 lives across Chicago. Our model is completely tuition-free. We serve kids ages 5-18 who otherwise would not be able to afford music education. Since music education has benefits that extend far beyond the artistic benefits, we view ourselves as an institution building future leaders. We build cognitive, academic, and social-emotional skills through an intense and rigorous curriculum. Our students learn with us for up to 12 hours per week and their families fulfill a significant volunteer time requirement. In the last 4 years, the school has grown more than 2X, and we're just getting started.

Job Summary

The Human Resources Manager will lead and direct all people processes at TPMS, ensuring TPMS faculty and staff have the support they need to be effective in their roles. Processes include recruiting and onboarding; performance management; compensation and benefits; organizational health and culture; diversity, equity, and inclusion; payroll management; and HR data management and reporting. He/she/they will work closely with the Chief Operating Officer and other leaders, managing upwards and laterally in addition to individually contributing on human resources needs.

Responsibilities

  • Design, continuously improve, and implement routine HR processes for TPMS staff and faculty, including recruiting and onboarding, regular performance management, and assessing and improving our organizational health and culture
  • Ensure compensation and benefits are administered effectively and in a way that enhances overall employee experience
  • Manage Human Resources data and reporting
  • Maintain compliance with federal, state and local employment and benefits laws and regulations
  • Coordinate staff-wide meetings and retreats

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong interest in Human Resources, with 2+ years of experience in the function a strong plus
  • Computer skills required include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Google (Drive)
  • Exemplary organizational skills; ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and complete at a high level
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to collaborate and work with people from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds
  • Belief in our transformative mission is a must
