Job Description

The New York Public Library is the nation’s largest public library system. Within its landmark building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The Library Shop serves hundreds of thousands of visitors a year with a collection of exclusive book-related gifts, jewelry and accessories and of course books for adults and children. We are seeking a Full-Time Senior Sales Associate who assumes responsibility for the Gifts and Pop-up Shops. Enthusiasm, product knowledge and excellent communication skills as well as a passion for the Library are necessary for you to enjoy and succeed in this position.

Experience is a must, preferably in a boutique, specialty store or museum, as is Saturday availability and able to supervise the entire shop as needed.
(Open Sundays during holiday hours and availability is required). Beyond that a flexible schedule is preferred. 

Key Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
  • Reporting to the Shop Manager, this Senior Sales Associate will:
  • Acquires and effectively communicates (to customers and colleagues) detailed product knowledge of all items in the Gift and Pop-up shops while gaining a basic knowledge of the books and souvenir shop inventory
  • Acquires mastery of all basic Shop Operational Procedures; Opening and Closing, Cash Management, POS System
  • Trains and mentors sales associates to maximum efficiency
  • Able to delegate tasks to the sales staff
  • Utilizes basic selling techniques as appropriate from suggesting add-on sales
  • Responsible for maintaining adequate stock levels and organization of all items in the Gift and Book Shop which includes the sales floor and overstock (for a six and occasionally seven day week operation).
  • Knowledge of stock room inventory and replenishes for shop as necessary
  • Cash responsibilities; register accuracy, change orders and processing daily deposits
  • Maintains visual standards and displays
  • Places and follow through on customer special orders and requests in the Gift Department
  • Assists with preparing staff and stock for yearly inventory
  • Stays abreast of all NYPL activities and services as the shop acts as a Visitor/Info Desk for the Library Patrons
  • Participates in evening events as required
Decision-Making Responsibilities:
  • Manage the daily operations of the shop in the absence of the manager 
  • Resolves customer service problems  
  • Supervises staff issues 
  • Supervises a retail staff up to (10+) Sales Associates 

Skills Knowledge and Expertise
Required Education:   
  • Education requirements: college graduate preferred or equivalent work experience 
  • 2 years minimum working experience, preferably in a retail or sales environment 
  • Good to excellent communication skills  
  • Visual memory  
  • Able to multitask and motivate staff  
  • Social Skills: Gracious and generous 

Please Note: Effective August 2, 2021, absent a qualifying exception for medical or religious reasons, newly hired employees of the New York Public Library must present proof of receipt of a COVID-19 vaccination and may not begin employment at the Library until 14 days after their receipt of their second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or 14 days after their first dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine.  Newly hired employees who need additional time to receive their vaccination prior to their start date may request an adjournment of their start date with their hiring manager.  The Library will consider such requests on a case by case basis, depending upon the Library’s operational needs, among other factors.  The Library will further consider exemptions for prospective employees who cannot become vaccinated due to a qualifying medical condition or a sincerely held religious belief or practice.  Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment and who seek a medical or religious exemption to the Library’s vaccination policy will be provided with additional instructions at the time of the conditional offer.

  • Limited to average physical effort - able to lift and “cart” merchandise to/from the shop

FLSA Status

35 hour work week
Saturday availability and able to supervise the entire shop as needed.
