Description

Overview
The Cataloging department provides discoverability of all materials in all formats to patrons of the BookOps member libraries who search the public online catalog. Materials are discoverable if they are cataloged correctly and accurately with author, title, subject and series access points, in formats utilized by the ILS, thereby making more materials available to more library patrons in both NYPL and BPL circulating collections as well as Research collections.

Under guidance of a Supervising Librarian, the Senior Librarian performs original and complex copy cataloging of materials in all formats including serials for both the adult and juvenile collections of the BookOps member libraries of NYPL and BPL. A significant focus of the position entails cataloging of world language materials in Romance and Western European languages, particularly French, Italian, German, and Spanish.

Responsibilities
  • Performs original and complex copy cataloging of print and non-print formats for adult and juvenile collections and world language resources in Romance and Western European languages, particularly French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
  • Provides classification for print and non-print resources in English and World Language collections.
  • Edits and upgrades existing brief MARC records to full-level cataloging standards.
  • Performs cataloging of serial publications as needed.
  • Adheres to RDA standards and other national cataloging rules, such as ISBD guidelines.
  • Aids in the maintenance of the catalog database.
  • Records cataloging statistics as required.
  • Plans and executes special cataloging assignments, and contributes to the development of procedures, manuals, and reports.


Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education & Certifications
  • ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and Information Science (MLS, MLIS)

Required Experience
  • Recent MLS/MLIS graduates are encouraged to apply

Required Skills
  • Knowledge of RDA, Library of Congress Subject and Name headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC formats and principles of authority control.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages, especially French, Italian, German, and Spanish.
  • Familiarity with a ILS system (preferably Innovative's Sierra) and a bibliographic utility such as OCLC Connexion.
  • Familiarity with emerging trends and issues in cataloging.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient experience using Google Suite or Microsoft Office software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively on projects with a variety of colleagues.

- Language Skills Preferred: French, Italian & German (at least one)
- Secondary Preferred: Any -OR- combination of two or more of the above
