Readers Services Coordinator

The role of the Reader Services department is to create, promote, and advance the culture of reading at the New York Public Library and to support the Library's reading-related goals (specifically, to engage new audiences and encourage them to utilize Library materials). Additionally, the department helps establish NYPL as a leading voice in the world of books and literature. As part of these efforts, the Readers Services department provides personalized reading recommendations, promotes books online, raises the profile of libraries and librarians as book experts, and trains and supports staff in 88 neighborhood libraries to inspire and empower them to create the best collections for their community.

This team is seeking a Readers Services Coordinator with a passion and well-rounded expertise around reading, an understanding of promoting and marketing titles and materials to all ages, an outgoing personality, a strong belief in the role of public libraries in the reading ecosystem, an ability to build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships to achieve deadlines, and significant writing / editorial expertise.
Reporting to the Associate Director, Readers Services, the Readers Services Coordinator:

  • Creates book-related digital content
  • Provides personalized recommendations via email, twitter, etc.
  • Maintains the library's book content on the homepage
  • Produces quarterly staff picks for an online tool
  • Manages a recommendation group across the library
  • Manages the work of the best book committees and the production of annual best-of lists
  • Conducts regular staff training in three boroughs
  • Performs regular branch visits
  • Organizes book buzzes
  • Supports departmental projects and library-wide initiatives such as exhibitions, print publications, and partnerships
  • Stays current with books and publishing
  • Performs other related duties as required
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 5 years minimum of book-related work experience
  • Merchandising experience
  • Significant experience writing and copy editing
  • Experience training and mentoring staff
  • Excellent communication and writing skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of the literary community, public libraries, and experience with readers advisory / recommendations
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
  • Collaborative with strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to perform multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Understanding of marketing and promotion around books
  • Strong computer and other related technology skills
  • Knowledge of Library resources
  • A willingness to travel throughout the Library's service area
  • Experience with multilingual communities, accessibility standards
  • Masters degree in Library and Information Science, English Literature, or a related field
