Position Overview

As the Director of Development for the Museum, you will be a vital member of the leadership team, responsible for driving external relationship building and fundraising efforts that elevate the public profile of the Museum, increase stakeholder commitment, and expand organizational resources. Working closely with the President & CEO, you will cultivate relationships with organizations and individuals whose funding interests and objectives align with the Museum's mission and goals, with a primary focus on individual and foundation giving. In addition, you will foster partnerships with a wide array of educational institutions, NGOs, and community groups that may collaborate with the Museum on programs, exhibits, and other initiatives of mutual benefit. You will also manage key affinity groups and advise and support the President & CEO in the engagement of external constituents. This is a unique opportunity for a seasoned fundraising professional to make a significant impact on the success of the Museum.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a member of senior management within the Museum, providing leadership and inspiration with focus on external relations and donor cultivation.

  • Plan, organize, and oversee all activities of the Development department, establishing and meeting goals and objectives, including staff supervision, professional development, and departmental budget management.

  • Offer thought leadership in collaboration with President & CEO in the crafting of strategies that will bolster organizational resources and enhance the long-term growth and sustainability of the Museum.

  • Refine and constantly reinforce the Museum’s case for giving, internally and externally.

  • Reinforce a workplace environment in which all team members recognize the value of philanthropy and volunteerism.

  • Identify external organizations with potential for high value collaboration, initiating contact and acting as a primary facilitator and coordinator of long-term planning and relationship building.  

  • Provide direction in the creation of strategies, goal setting, and action plans to increase contributed revenue through an annual fund and other individual giving programs.

  • Create development initiatives that support and communicate the mission, goals, and values of the organization, thereby strengthening donor impact and commitment.  

  • Cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects, donors, and representatives of funding agencies, capable of major gifts.

  • Identify and assess opportunities to enhance the Museum’s public profile as an essential resource for education, historic preservation, cultural engagement, and social discourse.

  • Act as both a strategic “thinker” and “voice” within the management team, galvanizing internal interest to plan and pursue new initiatives and partnerships that raise the public profile and advance the mission.

  • Craft applications and reporting requirements for government and foundation grants.

  • Refine existing development programs and institute novel approaches to fund development, such as planned giving, corporate membership, etc.

  • Oversee departmental expenses in accordance with budget/forecast expectations.

  • Create processes and metrics to ensure that fundraising strategies are effectively implemented and that goals are achieved, including gift recognition methods, prospect and donor tracking, conversion and retention rates, etc.

  • Acquire in-kind gifts of equipment, supplies, and services that support Museum operations; actively encourage the gifting of objects and artifacts for exhibits.

  • Lead the development of fundraising events, ensuring positive financial results and collaborating appropriately across internal departments.

  • Assist in identification of Board of Directors and Advisory Council prospects.

  • Lead donor and stakeholder cultivation meetings, including dynamic building tours that convey the essence of the Museum experience and organizational impact.

  • Provide strategic thinking around future capital campaign possibilities and other organizational structure and positioning to enhance case for giving.

  • Serve as a liaison between the Museum and community partners on collaborative projects and efforts that aim to advance the Museum’s commitment to the community.

  • Represent the organization in meetings, receptions, and other special events; and, deliver presentations to familiarize members of the community and potential partners with the Museum’s mission and offerings.

  • Research corporations, foundations, government, and individuals to identify sources of contributed revenue and in-kind gifts for both general operations and capital projects.

  • Oversee a comprehensive institutional database of donor prospects and key partners/stakeholders, which includes updated contact information, tracks ongoing communication, and includes relevant information about the given relationships.

  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with key stakeholders, ensuring continuous communication and recognition.

  • Schedule and support interactions between President & CEO and external constituents.  

  • Continuously refine the organizational case for giving and reinforce a workplace environment in which all staff recognize the value of philanthropy and volunteerism.

  • Lead with impeccable integrity and consistently model the Core Values.

  • Participate in fostering an organizational culture that values innovation, promotes inclusion, and inspires excellence in the work environment.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience / Qualifications / Requirements

  • 5 or more years of demonstrated success with both non-profit management and fundraising.  Prior experience within a museum environment is highly desired.

  • Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills.  Ability to engage others as a compelling leader and authority on the Museum’s content, operations, and relevancy.

  • Thorough understanding of key components of donor and membership programs. 

  • Track record of success in cultivating prospects and securing substantial financial gifts.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills are a must.  Ability to present dynamically in front of groups.

  • General knowledge of how to cultivate contributed revenue through granting agencies, major gifts, annual fund, planned giving, sponsorship, and membership.  Demonstrated expertise and success in one or more specific areas.

  • Substantial experience working closely with volunteers.  Direct experience with recruitment, management, and recognition of volunteers is desirable.

  • Track record of establishing strong relationships with community organizations, associations, and government agencies. 

  • Strong knowledge of research methods for identifying corporate, foundation, or individual prospects.

  • Understanding of regulations surrounding charitable contributions and related tax implications is preferred.

  • Ability to read and comprehend budgets and financial statements is necessary.

  • Professional demeanor and conduct in all interactions, both internally and externally.

  • Able to work under pressure and deadlines, while maintaining attention to details.

  • Strong administrative skills and competency in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint.

  • Able to constantly operate a computer or other office productivity machinery.

  • Reliable transportation and ability to attend offsite meetings is required.

  • Enthusiasm for working in an organization where change is frequent, structure is evolving, and flexibility, teamwork, and good humor are absolute necessities. 

  • Able to work some evenings and weekends.

Education   Bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, non-profit management or a related field is preferred.
