Job Details:

+ Position Purpose:

The Medical Assistant is responsible for performing any combination of the following duties under direction of physician to assist in examination and treatment of patients.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties:

Primary Duties

+ Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.

+ Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.

+ Record patients' medical history, vital statistics and information such as test results in medical records.

+ Prepare and administer medications as directed by the physician.

+ Collect blood, tissue or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.

+ Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets and physicians' instructions to patients.

+ Help physicians examine and treat patients, handing them instruments and materials or performing such tasks as giving injections and removing sutures.

+ Authorize drug refills and provide prescription information to pharmacies as directed by the physician.

+ Prepare treat rooms for patient examinations, keeping the rooms neat and clean.

+ Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.

+ Schedule appointments for patients.

+ Change dressings on wounds.

+ Contact medical facilities or departments to schedule patients for tests and/or admission.

+ Perform general office duties such as answering telephones, taking dictation and completing insurance forms.

+ Inventory and order medical, lab and office supplies and equipment.

+ Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.

+ Set up medical laboratory equipment.

+ Positive and supportive team member to staff members, clinic and hospital.

+ Strive to ensure continual compliance with Departmental and Hospital Policies and Procedures and State/Federal Regulations.

+ Can identify & access system to report abuse to employee and/or patients.

+ Performs routine to moderately difficult assessment/treatment procedures such as EKG's, venipuncture, cholesterol, holder monitors, ultrasounds, audiometers, blood pressure stress tests, ambulatory monitors, glucose screenings, hematocrits, etc.

+ Attend required medical in-service training as needed.

+ Performs other duties as assigned.

+ Maintain compliance with departmental, hospital and state and federal regulations and policies.

+ Working knowledge of the phone

+ Follows policy and procedures for infection control, safety, and risk management.

+ Completes maintenance work orders appropriately.

+ Participates in Disaster Drills, demonstrates knowledge of emergency preparedness.

+ Respects the confidentiality of patient records, and uses complete dis creation when discussing patient information.

+ Utilizes all department form appropriately.

+ Able to identify victims and the process for reporting abuse.

+ Able to apply National Patient Safety goals to care and documentation.

+ Collect, label and transport all specimens appropriately.

+ Demonstrates knowledge of routine equipment.

+ Demonstrates proper techniques when setting up for procedures.

+ Demonstrates knowledge of emergency equipment and procedures.

+ Collaborates with patient care planning

+ Ability to gather resources within the hospital and clinic to provide adequate care.

+ Active participation in education specific to patient diagnosis and need.

+ Acts as a resource person to other staff members.

+ Participates in Code Blue Drills and other emergency codes.

+ Able to assess the geriatric patient for safety, medication dosage and appropriateness.

+ Able to translate medications into pediatric doses and use proper equipment for patient's size and age.

+ Act as a liaison between patients, families, physicians and staff.

+ Complete workload assignments.

+ Respect the confidentiality of patient records and uses complete discretion when discussing patient information.

Secondary Duties

o Demonstrates 100% commitment to performing according to the CHOICE values of TMH and representing the organization in a positive and professional manner.

o Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationships with all co?workers.

o Adheres to TMH and department dress code policies and procedures.

o Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-motivated; manages activity and time.

o Completes annual education, training, in-service, and certification requirements; attends departmental staff meetings or reads meeting minutes.

o Maintains regulatory requirements.

o Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

o Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated times.

o Actively participates in departmental and facility performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.

o Strives to ensure continual compliance with departmental, hospital, state and federal regulations and policies.

o Follows policies and procedures for infection control, safety, and risk management to ensure a safe environment for patients, public and staff.



o High School Diploma or GED

o Current valid Driver's License

o Successful completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Course

o Must be Registered or Certified

o Current certification in CPR required

Knowledge Required:

Experience Required:

o Up to one year experience with patients in a clinic setting required.
