Job Description

For decades, the 900,000 residents of the South Side of Chicago have experienced health disparities ranging from materially higher disease incidence and comorbidities to significantly lower life expectancy. These health disparities reflect a history of racial inequities and underinvestment, both of which have contributed to a fragmented healthcare delivery landscape with limited resources. Today, over 50% of all South Side residents leave the South Side to receive their care. In an unprecedented initiative to address these challenges, which are only growing more acute, the care providers of Chicago’s South Side have formed a comprehensive coalition of FQHCs, safety net hospitals, and health systems driven by community input and dedicated to fundamentally advancing health care access and better health outcomes for Chicago’s South Side residents.

The coalition -- comprised of Advocate Trinity Hospital, Beloved Community Family Wellness Center, Chicago Family Health Center, Christian Community Health Center, Friend Health, Jackson Park Hospital, Near North Health, The New Roseland Community Hospital, Saint Bernard Hospital, Sinai Chicago-Holy Cross Hospital, South Shore Hospital, TCA Health, and University of Chicago Medicine -- has established a new not for profit organization, the South Side Healthy Community Organization (“SSHCO”), as the vehicle by which it will facilitate health care transformation on Chicago’s South Side, in partnership with the community it serves.
Our client intends to implement a comprehensive Healthy Community Model focused on primary and specialty care access, preventive and chronic care management, care coordination and management, provider collaboration, community engagement, and a connected digital and technological infrastructure. The four pillars of their model are:
  • Expanded and enhanced access to primary care, building on the strength of the existing FQHC networks
  • Increased access to high-need, high-quality integrated specialty programs close to home
  • Deployment of a comprehensive care coordination and SDoH platform to address social needs and drive preventative care; and
  • Establishment of a connected care technology platform enabling better care access, coordination and delivery across providers and organizations

Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in a challenging healthcare environment, display strong operating and financial leadership responsibility, and have proven experience with building organizations from the ground up. They will have experience within human services, community health centers, community hospitals, or in a multi-faceted organization with complex business, technical, and regulatory demands.

Reports To: The Board of Directors


  • Exercises good judgment by making sound and well-informed decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; makes effective and timely decisions, even when data is limited, or solutions produce unpleasant consequences; is proactive and achievement oriented
  • Set clear priorities, delegate, and guide investment in people and systems; keen analytic, organization, and problem-solving skills, which support and enable sound decision-making
  • Responsible for keeping the SSHCO Board of Directors abreast on timelines and deliverables for SSHCO implementation
  • Serves as a liaison between the SSHCO Board of Directors and the HFS regarding SSHCO implementation timeline and deliverables
  • Create and monitor organizational culture and advance strategies that demonstrate the commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment for all
  • Build strategic relationships between community, business, hospital, and government partners
  • Demonstrate a commitment to a participation management style and to a team-oriented model of care
  • Lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan
  • Oversee short-term operational and long-term strategic planning while holding appropriate parties responsible for implementation
  • Maintain overall fiscal responsibility for the annual operating budget and financial objectives, and oversee the most effective use of financial resources, working closely with the Board and staff
  • Build a culture of teamwork and excellence among employees and staff; lead employee engagement initiatives within established targets
  • Actively engage with the community and community organizations to promote good public relations and to ascertain community needs as Represent the Organization within the community.
  • Demonstrate excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; must be a persuasive negotiator able to achieve consensus among differing opinions
  • Cultivate a strong and transparent relationship with the Board of Directors and its Committees to meet the obligations and effective governance of the organization
  • Identify workforce skills, knowledge, and ability gaps to meet strategic objectives and implements plans to train, develop, and close those gaps through internal or external resources
  • Represent SSHCO at public-facing events and function as the primary spokesperson for the organization
Experience Required:
  • Proven experience serving underserved populations
  • Proven financial skills including healthcare reimbursement, managed care, and financial accountability
  • Ability to leverage data and analytics to drive results and measure progress
  • Proven ability to build organizations or must have strong turnaround experience
  • Excellent interpersonal skills for relationship-building
  • Ability to establish and leverage internal and external relationships
  • Evidence of impacting culture change
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to communicate the value of strategic initiatives to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and professionalism in working with sensitive and personal information
  • Must have a strong sense of organizational development
  • Fundraising experience is a plus
Preferred Experience:
  • 10 - 15 years of leadership experience
  • Healthcare experience is required
  • Working knowledge of Social Determinants of Health and their correlation to health outcomes
Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Master’s degree in health administration, business, public health, or related field highly preferred
