Summary: The Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, known as the Episcopal Church in Connecticut (ECCT) is a non-profit Christian religious organization devoted to participating in God’s mission. ECCT provides oversight and administrative support for over 150 Episcopal parishes on behalf of the 60,000 Episcopalians living in the state. ECCT is one of over 100 dioceses that collectively form The Episcopal Church, a U.S.-based member church of the world-wide Anglican Communion. The Staff Accountant position is responsible for the daily oversight, financial accuracy and timeliness of transactions within all primary and subsidiary accounts, accounts reconciliations, financial reports, payroll and benefits processing, the management of schedules in order to generate and interpret essential financial information that is consistent with the prudent management of the institutional funds. Position Description: This position is viewed as a significant role for the success of the accounting department and will be required to have a robust acumen in accounting and financial management. This position supports the members of the finance and operations team to ensure that the organization meets its management and fiduciary objectives. The Staff Accountant must demonstrate a keen sense of knowledge and practical application of the accounting principles. The Staff Accountant must have the ability to promote and maintain professional collaborative relationships, improve efficiencies, and ensure the implementation of policies and procedures established by ECCT finance team in collaboration with the Controller and the Canon for Mission Finance & Operations. The Staff Accountant will report to the Controller under the direction of the Canon for Mission Finance & Operations. Duties and Responsibilities: The Staff Accountant in accordance with GAAP, will be responsible in safeguarding the accuracy, transparency, compliance, and timely processing, and ensuring the continuity of business operations. The essential functions of this position include: Management and oversight of Accounts Manager: · In collaboration with the Accounts Manager oversee and verify all transactions to ensure the submission of all required compliance supporting documentation for the processing of receivables and payables. · Maintain and reconcile the daily batches on all revenue streams and process remote deposits via digital express platform. · Manage, track, and digitize all receipts and notes receivables to ensure accuracy and archive standards. · Act as a stand-in for Account Manger to ensure continuity of business operations. Key Business Responsibilities: · Demonstrated acumen in preserving professional business relationships, facilitate in providing quality resources to staff, parishes, affiliates, and vendors. · Prepare journal entries, monthly bank settlements, and reconciliations on all transactions and accounts. · Manage and authorize positive pay per banking institution’s policies. · Reconcile and maintain all relevant accounting schedules pertinent to the continuity of the business operations. · Provide detailed analyses and explanations as needed of all transactions and variances. · Manage and track staff credit card digitized processing, notifications, coding, and compliance and prepare monthly journal entries. · Authenticate all grant requests and supporting documents, ensure the tracking, recording, and digitizing of internal and external disbursements. · Processes and maintains bi-weekly payroll of about 30 employees using PayChex system; Issue 1099 and W2 year-end related statements. · In collaboration with Human Resources enter, maintain, and processes employment changes including earnings and deduction modifications. · Partner with Benefits Administrator to oversee employee benefits elections to coincide with deductions and invoicing. · Support staff with accounting and financial queries. · Produce quarterly YTD expense reports to facilitate budgetary constraint requirements. · Assist the Controller with the necessary preparation for the annual independent audits. · Create in collaboration with finance department automate accounting processes and procedures and recommend modifications, and digitize documents as needed. · Research, analyze, communicate, and implement the relevant recommendations that improve efficiencies in collaboration with the supervisor. · Support finance department in meeting preparation and presentations for relevant boards, committees, and wider church gatherings. · Produce, refine, and update in collaboration with supervisor adequate accounting policies and procedures, that facilitate and streamline systems and processes. · Performs additional tasks and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor and the Canon for Mission Finance and Operations. Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Certificates and Licenses: · CPA Designation Preferred · Valid Driver’s license with safe driving history. Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of MS Office Suite, especially Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, the individual should also be proficient in navigating the Internet. Professional experience with financial and numerical spreadsheets. Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports and business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from individuals or groups of mangers, church leaders, members and other. Facility in Spanish and/or Creole a plus. Math Ability: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts. Familiarity with statistical analysis is a plus. Financial Management Ability: Familiarity with accounts payables, receivable, forecasting and cash management, comprehension of the general ledger. Familiarity with GAAP compliance, excellent analytical and organizational skills. Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Attentive to accuracy and details. Ability to resolve issues in a timely and efficient manner. Has the experience and judgment to manage multiple projects, to plan and accomplish goals. Some employees work in our offices in Meriden while others work in variety of other locations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Supervisory Responsibility: Directly supervises the Accounts Manager position (full-time, non-exempt position). Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: The position is fulltime, exempt position, defined as 40-50-hour work week. Travel: Travel throughout Connecticut may be essential in support of the mission with the Controller and or Canon for Mission Finance & Operations during the year. Attendance at evening and weekend meetings should be anticipated. Mileage and expenses are reimbursed according to ECCT personnel and budgetary policy. Education/ Experience: · Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field. · Practical knowledge of the General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). · At least 5-7 years’ experience
