The City of Falls Church is recruiting for a full-time Mechanic I position within its fleet Division. A Mechanic I performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment. The incumbent in this position will check light vehicles up to and including crew cabs. Assignments are received from a supervisor in the form of work orders noting the problem area or service required. An incumbent in this class performs minor repairs or preventive maintenance services under the general supervision of a Supervisory Automotive Mechanic/Advisor. The individual will report to the Superintendent of Public Works.

Illustrative Examples of Work:
  • Performs overall preventive maintenance and repairs on motor equipment while the customer waits including oil and filter changes topping of fluids, and checking tire pressure;
  • Replaces and changes tires;
  • Checks and replaces vehicle light bulbs, spark plugs, belts and brakes;
  • Performs road tests on vehicles, as needed, following completion of services and/or repair;
  • Schedules appointments with user agencies for scheduled preventive maintenance;
  • Performs related work as required.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Some knowledge of the standard practices, procedures, tools and equipment employed in the preventive maintenance service and the repair of light vehicles and equipment used by the City;
  • some knowledge of the occupational safety standards and practices of automotive service and repair;
  • some knowledge of the operational principles and methods of repairing gasoline and diesel engines;
  • skill in the use of the tools, materials, and equipment employed in the preventive maintenance service and the repair of motor vehicles;
  • ability to make minor repairs and adjustments and to perform preventive maintenance services;
  • ability to perform tasks which frequently require strenuous physical effort
  • the ability to read and write in English.


  • Completion of high school or trade school-level courses.
  • At least one year of experience performing non-skilled automotive preventive maintenance and repair services on a full range of light automotive equipment and completion of grade school level courses; or
  • any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

must possess a valid driver's license issued by the employee's state of residence.

  • High School diploma or GED;
  • three years' experience performing automotive preventive maintenance and repair services on a full range of light motor equipment.

Hours: 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, plus overtime emergency hours as required.

Salary and Benefits: Up to $61,194 + depending on qualifications to start. This is a full time position with all City benefits.
