The Big Cheese
Washington, DC
  • Expired: over a month ago. Applications are no longer accepted.
Job Description

Company: The Big Cheese Company

Position: Sales Manager (our first ever)

Location: Washington D.C. Metro area (the DMV) or mid-Atlantic

Start date: Immediately

At the Big Cheese, we’re big and bold. Well…let me clarify, not physically big, most of us our quite small, but we think big and we act bold. During the height of the pandemic, we decided to buy 1mm pounds of aged sharp cheddar and launch an online cheese company. Yup, bold. Over the course of the last 18 months, we’ve penetrated households across the US via online sales, but now it’s time to get even bigger – like grocery store bigger! And while we have a cheesy history (our Founder’s grandpa started a little cheese company named Sargento Foods), we have no idea how to sell into grocery stores, specialty retail, nor distributors. Not kidding. So, we need your help!

If you join The Big Cheese, you will be responsible for landing our very first retail accounts. That’s a big deal! Seriously though, we need someone who knows the retail food business and how to penetrate broadline grocery, small, mid, and specialty grocery as well as the distributors that support them. You are our first “boots on the ground” and will be instrumental in helping us develop pricing and promotional programs, our in-store marketing programs and just about everything that is required to get a product on (and more importantly, off) the shelf (ideally at a high velocity). While you will be working directly with the Founder/CEO and an operations team, you’re the wo/man in the market using your experience and knowledge of retail grocery to help us grow into an actual Big cheese company.

What’s in it for you? First, phenomenal cheese. Seriously, our cheese (and popcorn) are exceptional, they sell themselves. Second, a highly competitive salary based on your years of experience and deep knowledge of how to make us a Big success. Third, bonuses. Yup, we’ll give you more money if you can make it happen. Fourth, benefits, lots of them. We’ll make sure you stay healthy, have great eyesight and pearly white teeth for those sales meetings.

The stuff you will need to do…

· Develop the pricing and promotional strategies for all our products for retailers and distributors

· Manage our trade/promotional spend in key accounts

· Penetrate the buyer network across the mid-Atlantic/east coast to get our products on the shelf

· Develop those relationships and cultivate new ones

· Execute an overall sales strategy to meet or exceed revenue and placement goals

· Create and deliver on-brand presentations

· Work with marketing team to develop future sales materials as needed

· Provide exemplary sales and ongoing customer service for all accounts, in addition to supporting accounts with cheese tastings, events, etc.

· Maintain updated customer information files (I know, it’s a pain, but must be done)

· Attend and manage trade shows as needed

· Many more things we don’t even know about, but you do

Qualifications

· 3+ years’ experience in retail food sales

· Broadline distribution and national account management experience

· Must have intimate knowledge on how to stand up a retail sales program, not just execute one

· Excellent interpersonal skills (obviously) as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills

· A love of PowerPoint and Excel, and consider yourself a data savvy sales professional

· A track record of “making it happen” and a propensity to problem solve and make great decisions (personally and professionally)

· Ability to take opportunities from conception to execution

· Reside in the DMV or mid-Atlantic with a willingness to travels

· Ability to prioritize and manage time effectively, while thriving in a remote environment

· Possess a valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and means of personal transportation (if that wasn’t obvious)

· A massive drive to be big and bold in your quest to make The Big Cheese Company a very big cheese company.

Company Description
So who are we?

Have you herd our story? It’s grate!

The Big Cheese was born in the midst of chaos. During the height of the pandemic, the Big Cheese at The Big Cheese, Josh Gentine discovered some phenomenally bold, aged cheddar in his hometown of Plymouth, the Cheese Capital of the WorldTM. Cheese has always been near and dear to Josh - he grew up playing hide-and-go-seek among the slicing, dicing, and cutting machines of his family’s cheese company, Sargento Foods, Inc. – so when he fell in love with this cheese, he knew he had to share it with others. He built a team and decided to launch a direct-to-consumer website just in time for the holidays. The goal was simple: deliver unprecedented flavor with a sense of humor. Fortunately, the pandemic affirmed what they already knew: being together with loved ones was still the most important part of life and cheese was often an added attraction. The initial launch was a huge success, and it inspired The Big Cheese team to build a portfolio of products to match the magic of that first aged cheddar. And once you try our cheddar-soaked popcorn, you’ll know that we succeeded!

Whether it’s the legen-dairy aged cheddars or the highly addictive cheddar popcorn, The Big Cheese is confident it will take its place at the table of your life and place a bold punctuation mark at the end of each day.
