Empowering families to bring about change and make a difference in the lives of others in their communities is central to everything we do. We raise awareness to tell the world about a devastating, little known disease. We educate health professionals, helping them to provide responsive care in their communities. We fund leading-edge science and work with leading biopharma companies to advance research. In recent years AFTD has enjoyed rapid growth, with a doubling of our staff and a concomitant increase in the potential impact we can have for our community. This new position reflects our Board and CEO’s commitment to ensuring that AFTD’s infrastructure and operational systems are robust and optimized to realize this potential. The right candidate will be an experienced leader who is passionate and energized to build the systems and core support teams that will enable our professional staff to advance AFTD’s mission efficiently and effectively, in alignment with our core values of knowledge, compassion, collaboration, respect, and dignity.Job Description About the role: The Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for leading all of AFTD’s major business functions and annual cycles across Finance, Human Resources, Technology, and Facilities. The COO is an integral member of the executive team and partners with the CEO and, at times, the Board of Directors. They will contribute to shaping the organization’s strategic direction by aligning resources and talent to key priorities through deep engagement with AFTD’s senior leaders and the organization. This position will be at the center of building a sustainable, impact-oriented, growing, and innovative organization -- including employee engagement and retention, professional development, culture-building and increasing employee diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI); financial management, office management, business development and contract management; and improving processes and systems to scale our operations. In partnership with the leadership team, the COO will support long-term external funding, budgeting, and financial planning in alignment with AFTD’s strategic plan. They will create financial and budgeting systems that inform and empower the organization to raise funds and deploy resources to maximize the advancement of program goals. The COO will leverage technology in support of the AFTD mission, recognizing that IT infrastructure and security are vital to efficiency and effectiveness of the organization today and in the future. The COO will design and manage the teams supporting AFTD’s Finance, Human Resources, Technology, and Operations functions and will provide day-to-day leadership to the organization, establishing metrics and measuring outcomes and impact. The COO is knowledgeable and experienced in Human Resources and organizational culture, DEI, complex systems management, and overall organizational leadership, as applied to a growing organization. FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES Essential Job FunctionsOperational Leadership: Drive and implement all operational aspects of the organization strategy: team coordination, integration, and strategic processes to support a highly complex, innovative portfolio of work. Leverage a team of direct reports and consultants to deliver on much of this work while maintaining hands-on leadership.Oversee the establishment and reporting of metrics and outcomes, current state, risks, and future potential. Contribute to the preparation of materials and talking points for Board updates.Cultivate a strong culture grounded in AFTD’s core values and reinforced by processes, systems, and norms such as collaboration, DEI and belonging. Establish and manage team meeting agendas and norms and launch team events, delegating where appropriate. Immediately and continuously evolve the technology infrastructure and appropriate processes for digital efficiencies with a focus to scale in alignment with AFTD’s growth. Act as the organizational leader of Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, and Facilities, managing variety and complexity of the role in a growth environment.Financial Leadership: Oversee financial planning. Prepare scenario planning, financial, and cash flow forecasts for future financial decisions and positions based on investments, asset management, donor funding, and projected grant commitments and expenses.Oversee institutional investment portfolio. In collaboration with the Investment Subcommittee and investment advisors, design the investment process, asset management, risk assessment, asset allocation levels, and overall investment analysis aimed at creating a portfolio of investments in compliance with the organization’s investment policy. Preserve company assets and the investment of surplus funds through collaboration with investment advisors and managers.Ensure that the investment policy established by the Board is executed effectively and provide quarterly updates to the CEO and Board Investment Subcommittee. Lead and support the organization budgeting process. Manage effectively within this budget and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered. Provide leadership and support to the Finance Director in plans, analysis, and reporting related to financial plans and contracts.Act as the staff lead for the for the Finance Committee, the Investment Subcommittee, and the Audit Committee.Maintain accountability for implementing strong internal controls and the annual independent audit process for AFTD and the FTD Disorders Registry LLC while liaising with external auditors, as appropriate. Oversee preparation, review, and filing of annual IRS Form 990 and Form 990-T. Organizational Leadership & Partnership with CEO: Facilitate seamless integration of departments within the overall organization, leveraging shared services and ensuring continuous improvement, learning, and that other synergies are realized. Collaborate and partner closely with the CEO on both strategic and operational issues. Provide the CEO with significant leverage regarding operational matters to enable greater focus on broader strategic issues and external relationships.With a holistic view and a growth mindset, lead the continued building and development of AFTD systems and processes to best service the expanding organization.Foster a collaborative culture that prioritizes open communication and dedicated support of internal teams as well as external stakeholders and members of the community AFTD serves. Liaise and engage meaningfully with program leadership to understand their operational needs and ensure effective and efficient operational support across talent, culture, finance, and workplace. Maintain knowledge of regulations and best practices affecting nonprofit organizations and develop and implement processes, policies, and procedures to assure compliance and mitigate risks.Be a strategic, executive leader and build on the successes of the current finance organization. Ensure an agile operational structure to further the Boards’ overarching goals and ambitions. Bring an expertise in developing and managing external, internal, and team relationships with diverse constituencies in diverse environments. Demonstrate active alignment with organization mission and core values. Provide strong problem solving and creative skills, as well as the ability to exercise sound, informed judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses. Demonstrate the ability to lead, motivate, and develop high-performing and diverse teams who deliver on ambitious goals and benchmarks. Be committed to building and fostering a diverse, inclusive, and collaborative workplace, display a multicultural competence, and work across lines of difference. Attend monthly Board Executive Committee meetings, providing backup for the CEO (who is the staff lead).Actively partner with AFTD leaders in Business Development efforts, developing additional revenue workstreams, in sync with FTD Disorders Registry LLC, from government and biopharmaceutical organizations. Other Job FunctionsAs a key member of AFTD’s leadership team, contribute expert knowledge in support of quality decisions regarding internal planning and AFTD’s overall strategic direction.Serve as a member of the leadership team carrying out AFTD’s responsibilities as Managing Member of the FTD Disorders Registry LLC.Create and conscientiously follow company policies and practices and take care of organizational property. Other duties as assigned by CEO and Board of Directors.Travel for organizational meetings and events as needed. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis position has supervisory responsibilities for the following roles and departments:Director of FinanceDirector of Human ResourcesDirector of Information Technology (TBH)Qualifications Knowledge, skills and abilities required for this role:Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, Management or similar; Master’s degree preferredCPA License a plusMinimum of 10 years of senior leadership experience, managing operations, finance, HR, facilities, and IT functionsMore than 15 years of finance experience Demonstrated experience effectively managing teamsExperience leading and integrating IT/Systems to improve effectiveness and efficienciesExperience working with external auditors, compliance, and regulatory oversightDemonstrated success in business development and contract managementExperience as a business leader/owner motivating, leading, and managing an organization to deliver results and grow a successful and diverse organizationStrong, current working knowledge of nonprofit organizations is a plusProven ability to
