The Comptroller’s Division of Investigations supports the office’s audit function by investigating allegations of fraud, waste, and abuse in government and publicly-funded entities and by working closely with law enforcement and prosecutors on criminal allegations. Investigators travel as needed and may be required to work a flexible schedule in order to meet deadlines. The Division of Investigations has teams in four regions - West, Middle, Mid East, and Upper East - based on geography and judicial districts. We are currently considering candidates for our West Tennessee region.
Major responsibilities for this position will include:
• Learning and performing investigative work involving allegations of fraud, waste, or abuse of public funds or property, including but not limited to:
o Conducting interviews;
o Reviewing and analyzing documents;
o Preparing case files in appropriate format;
o Researching laws and regulations;
o Recognizing and reporting process and transaction deficiencies;
o Preparing to present investigations and testimony in all phases of the judicial process;
o Following internal processes and guidelines
• Working with staff of local, state, and federal agencies; contract auditors; vendors; citizens, etc., to accomplish the mission of the organization.
• Seizing process improvement opportunities to streamline workflows and improve accuracy.
• Maintaining and continually improving individual contribution to a service-oriented culture that supports customers and leadership.
• Communicating clearly and frequently with leadership, team members, and customers.
• Utilizing a high degree of tact and diplomacy in all interactions.
• Using a variety of reporting methods to increase the likelihood of compliance with relevant laws, rules, regulations, standards, best practices, and policy.
To perform this job successfully, candidates must be able to apply knowledge of accounting principles and techniques in analyzing voluminous books and records, (manual and/or accounting systems) to find evidence of complex manipulation and/or concealment. They should possess the competencies to deal tactfully and proficiently with the public; to exercise common sense and good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions; and to express ideas clearly, concisely, and convincingly. Candidates should be familiar with accounting, auditing, and/or investigative procedures. Successful employees will maintain professionalism at all times and exhibit a high level of integrity in all situations.
To qualify for consideration, an applicant should have graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration with Accounting Emphasis, or with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice with a minimum of 9 semester hours in accounting and a minimum of 2 years financial investigative experience. Other combinations of education/experience, if equivalent, may qualify an applicant for consideration.
