Research Engineer

Your Role:

Tenable is looking for a Research Engineer to join our Asset Detection team. This position will involve researching device and application fingerprints, and developing checks/plugins to identify these assets via our products. The development will be in Nessus Attack Scripting Language (NASL), although experience in NASL programming is not required.

Your Opportunity:
  • Develop plugins for the Nessus vulnerability scanner based on research findings
  • Research, develop and improve methods of detection for currently unidentified services and products
  • Perform original research in identification tools and techniques, and developing plugins to utilize these techniques
  • Diagnose, research, reproduce and mitigate defects as part of the Tenable Research and Development team
What you'll need:
  • Ability to operate independently with little supervision as well as collaborate and work with others
  • Ability to self-educate and keep up to date with current security trends and exploitation methods
  • Ability to work within a virtualized lab environment
  • Understanding of common security vulnerabilities, detection and exploitation techniques
  • Experience with git version control
  • Experience working with multiple operating systems (proficiency with Linux a must)
  • Knowledge on the operation and management of network services
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and able to frequently shift priorities as needed
  • Robust problem-solving skills, the ability to learn from doing, personal accountability, and a positive and professional attitude
And ideally:
  • B.S. degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • 1 - 2 years of development experience
  • Database technologies and SQL knowledge (Oracle, MySQL, MSSQL, etc.)
  • Virtualization Technology (VMWare, Hyper-V, Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, Docker, etc.)
  • Some reverse engineering experience including basic binary analysis, packet capture analysis, and firmware analysis (using binwalk)
  • Experience with C, C++, Assembly (x86/x64 and/or ARM/ARM64) and scripting languages is desirable but not a must
  • Experience with systems administration and be comfortable working at the command line
  • Analysis of Network Capture Files with tools such as Wireshark, Bro
