Job Description: We are currently seeking a Mid-Level Laboratory Chemist for an Environmental Lab in Edison, NJ. The position involves laboratory testing and support. The associate is to perform established chemical tests and analyses. The position will support the inorganic labs. The associate performs metals analysis using ICP-AES and ICP-MS, mercury analysis and support the wide variety of wet chemistry analysis. The associate supports in the preparation and digestion of environmental samples for variety of inorganic analysis primarily metals and mercury, analytical data entry into Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), review inorganic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results. We will provide the ideal candidate with on-the-job training. We offer a collaborative environment with opportunities for learning and expanding knowledge and skills.

Salary Range: $55,000 to $70,000 DOE

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct ICP-AES, ICP-MS and mercury analysis utilizing promulgated EPA methodologies.
  • Conduct the digestion and sample preparation and analysis of environmental samples for metals, mercury, and wet chemistry analysis.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate instruments.
  • Prepare reagents and samples to be used in performing assays.
  • Demonstrate proper cleaning techniques for work area, instrumentation, and equipment.
  • Interpret and evaluate data, create an Electronic Date Package (EDP), and upload results to LIMS for a final report.
  • Perform review on the inorganic analytical data to ensure completeness and integrity of results.
  • Provide the necessary training to junior employees and monitor their work progress.
  • Oversee the overall operation of Inorganic department.
  • Perform sample disposal and laboratory clean ups for Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) principles.
  • Perform peer review for inorganic data validation.
  • Perform Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) review, internal audit, and corrective action when needed.
  • Backup chemist for variety of wet chemistry analysis in wet chemistry department.
  • Monitor work flow for incoming samples.
  • Check pending survey of samples and schedule workload accordingly.
  • Work independently on administrative and technical projects assigned by laboratory supervisors.
  • Support general inorganic lab operations and functions, including monitoring and requesting supplies and materials to maintain lab supply inventory.
  • Track inventory of supplies and reagents to ensure no interruption of work flow.
  • Trend and monitor key performance metrics as assigned by supervisors.
  • Operate other instrumentation as trained.
  • Assist with data validation.

Required Qualifications: To be considered for this position you must have:

  • BS or BA degree in a Chemistry or Biological science,
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in analytical chemistry or a related field.
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a safe driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Demonstrate excellent teamwork and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to work effectively with multiple disciplines.
  • A solid background in analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, documentation skills, and attention to detail are essential.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and changing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Seven years of experience in Inorganic Chemistry field.
  • Successful applicant will have strong knowledge and background in metals analysis using ICP-AES and ICP-MS instrumentation.
  • Successful applicant will need to have good attention to detail and be able to document all sampling meticulously (training will be provided as to requirements).
  • Excellent cross-functional team leadership and participation skills.
  • Knowledge of chemical families and compatibilities.
  • Environmental training (e.g., 40 Hour HAZWOPER certification), familiarity with air monitoring/environmental sample collection devices and maintenance, data recording, and processing skills are desirable.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and as a member of a team
  • Strong multi-tasking skills: must be able to perform operations simultaneously and must be able to switch from task to task upon demand.
  • Ability to successfully communicate with peers, managers and clients.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must have the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work evenings and/or weekends if required.
  • Must have the flexibility and ability to travel 25% of the time.
  • Must be able to work standing for long periods.
  • Must be able to work inside a chemical laboratory and handle chemicals all day.
  • Must be able to wear all PPE (personal protective equipment).
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and perform basic mathematical calculations.
