Summary:

The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice registered nurse who serves as a nurse expert in a specialty population or clinical condition nursing, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the nursing staff and teams at the Medical Center. The specialized knowledge and advanced skills required for this role include clinical expertise in the management of the specialty population/clinical condition and related nursing care; design and implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP); education and mentorship; consultation; performance improvement; and team leadership. The role has three spheres of impact across the health system's adult services that include the patient/family, nursing / interprofessional teams, and the organization/health system. This role works collaboratively with the clinical and administrative teams to support and ensure high quality standards of nursing care and professional practice to optimize patient, team, and system outcomes.

Involves specialty knowledge and advanced clinical expertise in assessment, diagnosis, and intervention to prevent, remediate, or alleviate illness and promote health with a defined specialty patient population, such as oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatric / behavioral health, adult health, acute / critical care, pain management, among others. Provides direct patient care including assessment, diagnosis, and management, leadership for systems improvements, teaching, mentoring, consulting, utilization of evidence-based practice including implementation and research appraisal skills, and team leadership and management. Impacts outcomes by providing expert consultation to patients/families, nurses and interdisciplinary team colleagues, and to the organization/health system including leading implementation of improvements in clinical care and health care delivery systems.

Required Qualifications:
Minimum of five (5) years of recent clinical RN experience in the specialty area
Master's degree from an accredited Nursing program
In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources
Advanced knowledge of skill for conducting evidence-based practice, data collection, analysis, and reporting
Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution
Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, providers, employees, and outside agencies as required
Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctorate degree (PhD or DNP) from an accredited Nursing program

License/Certifications:

Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California (CA BRN)
Current CNS license in the State of California (CA BRN)
Current American Heart Association CPR certification
Clinical Nurse Specialist or APRN specialty certification (e.g. ACCNS-AG, AGCNS-BC) or obtained within one year of hire
