JOB TITLE: Psychologist
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Psychology Services Director, the Psychologist, Health Facility provides necessary and quality psychological treatments/interventions and forensic/psychological assessments.
Tasks require knowledge and experience in psychological interventions, treatments, and assessment as well as typical office programs/applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Tasks include direct patient care, behavioral analyses, participation on an interdisciplinary team, forensic evaluations, psychological evaluations, and testimony in court. Direct client care includes, but is not limited to: individual therapy, group therapy, crisis interventions, and intake assessments. Behavioral analyses involve direct client observations across settings, review of behavioral data, and providing a written functional behavior assessment along with applicable behavior support plans. Participation on the interdisciplinary team involves attending meetings, discussing client progress, and training staff members.
Forensic evaluations include but are not limited to: dangerousness and risk assessment, trial competency, and progress reports. Psychological evaluations include, but are not limited to: cognitive functioning, adaptive functioning, academic achievement, and evaluations for individual education programs. Also precepts and provides guidance to psychology interns and practicum students.
The Psychologist, Health Facility may also work to assure conformance with standards of practice and providing training to different disciplines. This requires a high degree of initiative and independence in performing assigned tasks. Good judgment, organization, and ability to communicate effectively are of primary importance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must possess and maintain sufficient strength, agility, endurance, and sensory ability to perform the duties contained in this duty statement. Requires working with all levels of personnel within the organization while maintaining effective communication to meet objectives.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Position requires prolonged sitting and use of computer terminal and operation of various office machines. Regular interaction with clients and staff in monitoring provision of direct services, and Job Duty Statement: Psychologist (Health Facility) other conditions common to on and off residence environments. Exposure to communicable diseases, blood borne pathogens and other conditions common to a clinical treatment environment.
JOB CHARACTERISTICS:
This position requires knowledge of psychological and behavioral principles and practices, methods used in psychological evaluation and documentation, understanding of facility policy the services provided by the Psychology Services Department and guidelines and policies established by the organization. Incumbent works in support of client psychology services. The position requires an ability to plan, organize, and work in a specialized psychological treatment program involving members of other disciplines. Also recognize situations requiring creative application of technical skills and ability to develop creative approaches to the assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental disorders. This position requires good communication and analytical skills. Also, the ability to operate modern office equipment including application of software such as Excel and Word. Incumbent should possess professional integrity, alertness, tact, patience, and emotional stability.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
(80%) 20% Psychological Treatment
Provides crisis intervention, evaluation, and recommendations. Works with interdisciplinary team and level-of-care staff to identify risk factors for suicide and violence/homicide. Direct observation of clients across settings and regular interactions with clients. Provides individual and group therapy as warranted. Reviews client information and conducts intake of new admissions. Documentation of services pursuant to facility policies.
20% Behavioral Treatment
Reviews daily reports and communication boards on a daily basis. Addresses behavioral concerns with identified client(s) and document per facility policies. When treatment needs are identified, reviews available resources and identifies potential avenues for development. In collaboration with the Interdisciplinary Team and BMC Chair, develops proposal(s) for treatment program(s) and/or procedure(s), including those with highly restrictive interventions. Regularly reviews all behavior program plans, monitor for progress, and revise as warranted.
20% Evaluations
Conducts functional behavioral assessment and provide written report for annual IPP meetings. Completes psychological evaluations as warranted, including evaluating cognitive and adaptive functioning. Completes forensics evaluations as requested, including but not limited to: WIC 6500 certifications, In re Hop evaluations, PC 1368/1369/1370.1/1372 trial competency evaluations. As necessary, conducts malingering assessments, risk assessments, and other psychological evaluations.
20% Interface with Interdisciplinary Team and Other Facility Staff Members
Attends all Interdisciplinary Team meetings (ERNE, BIRT, IPP, Special IPP, Transition/Placement, etc.). Coordinates with Behavior Specialists regarding cases requiring additional behavioral supports. Works with Behavior Specialists to train interdisciplinary team and level-of-care staff on behavior plans. Communicates with levelof-care staff, vocational trainers, and educational instructors (e.g., SORP instructors, Court Competency trainers) regarding client progress.
TYPICAL TASKS
▪ Conduct various forms of group and individual therapy, including behavior modification and psychotherapy
▪ Select, administer, score, and interpret psychological tests
▪ Assess forensic clients and make recommendations on admission, transfer, discharge, and therapeutic activities
▪ Consult with medical personnel regarding forensic client status
▪ Evaluate and report on current and new programs
▪ Participate in treatment team, staff, and professional meetings
▪ Serve as consultants within the facility or to other agencies and groups
▪ May develop supportive resources and conduct mental health education
▪ May participate in training programs for other staff and volunteers
▪ May compile and analyze statistics
▪ Observe and intervene in instances of disruptive or assaultive behavior
▪ May inspect facility to identify security breaches that could lead to forensic client escape
▪ Observe and intervene in forensic client behavior that may signal an impending escape attempt
▪ Displays willingness and ability to accept increasing responsibility and varying assignments
