STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Responsible for collecting, posting and managing account payments. Responsible for submitting claims, following up with insurance companies and generating appropriate invoice reports.
SPECIFIC ACTIVITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Processes all Low Vision Clinic billings daily;
  • Records in Low Vision Clinic billing system all billings daily;
  • Prepares and submits clean claims to various insurance companies and other third parties either electronically or by paper.
  • Forwards completed billings to Accounting Billing Specialist, for entry into agency accounting system.
  • Answers questions from patients, clerical staff and insurance companies.
  • Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints.
  • Prepares, reviews and sends patient statements.
  • Evaluates patients financial status and establishes budget payment plans. Follows and reports status of delinquent accounts.
  • Reviews accounts for possible assignment and makes recommendations to the Chief Financial Officer, also prepares information for any collection methods employed.
  • Performs various collection actions including contacting patients by phone, correcting and resubmitting claims to third party payers.
  • Processes payments from insurance companies, in conjunction with other Accounting staff responsible for Agency collections.
  • Assists with billing other third parties including state systems, etc.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/ regulations.
  • Maintains contact with appropriate Lighthouse personnel for the purpose of obtaining information for billing on a timely basis;
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • At least two years experience in billing and accounts receivable required;
  • Associate degree in business, human services, or related field preferred;
  • Certification as a medical biller and coder required;
  • Must be familiarized with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services process for service authorization and billing.
  • Organizational skills, strong detail orientation, and good communication a plus;
  • Proficiency in computerized medical billing and accounting systems required; spreadsheet applications helpful;
