Project Estimator
- Full-Time
The Project Estimator supports and works with management, operations and estimating staff in the review of project plans, requirements and specifications. The Project Estimator generates budgets, estimates and proposals with the understanding of the constructability, means and methods, logistics, schedule, risk, and profitability of each project. The Estimator shall have extensive knowledge of construction means and methods, costs and engineering principles with a wide variety of project types and be capable of estimating hard bid, negotiated and conceptual projects.
Responsibilities:
- Manage bid organization, strategy, package preparation, proposal review, pricing and fee structure
- Analyze drawings and specifications
- Assemble accurate and well-organized estimates and proposals in a timely manner
- Provide clear and detailed quantity take-offs and pricing for a project; including but not limited to, earthwork, utilities, concrete, masonry, steel, and all MEP systems
- Complete schedule for project general conditions
- Work in conjunction with bid team to prepare an accurate bid proposal
- Assist with final assembly of estimate for presentation to client
- Subcontractor solicitation during bidding process
- Organize subcontractors bid quotations; negotiate to ensure quotes meet contract documents
- Maintain relationships with subcontractors and vendors, including prequalification
- Ensure subcontractors are provided with proper documentation related to project
- Review of project documents, prepare and price value analysis suggestions
- Provide and maintain unit pricing and database for material and labor costs
- Formulate cost break down from estimates
- Meet with clients to discuss options for proposed services
- Assist in managing Estimating Coordinator
- Other projects as assigned
Qualifications:
- College degree in civil engineering and/or construction management is preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in budgeting/estimating for a commercial general contractor
- Knowledge of Chicago/regional subcontractor base
- Broad range of experience with standard construction concepts, practices and procedures
- Conceptual and hard bid experience
- Strong negotiation skills
- Must be able to work in a fast-paced and customer service-oriented environment and have strong interpersonal and time management skills
- Must demonstrate the ability to work well under pressure, especially when facing bid deadlines
- Must work and complete assignments both individually and as part of a team; self-starter with the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Excellent computer and database skills including MS Outlook, Office and Project. BuildingConnected (or similar) and On-Screen Takeoff skills also preferred
- Highly organized with a strong attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities simultaneously, anticipate and solve problems, set priorities and meet deadlines and goals
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Comfortable with learning new technology
- Highly discrete, professional, efficient, honest, flexible and reliable
