Help build a small international development business with big goals. We seek qualified, energetic, self-motivated candidates for a part-time consultancy to lead our business development activities with large international donors including USAID, the World Bank, UN Agencies, multi-lateral institutions and foundations, including pipeline management, lead sourcing, and proposal development.

Our partners have cross-disciplinary expertise in payment systems, financial inclusion, telecommunications, and data analysis and modeling. SIA is based in Washington, DC with offices in Accra and Kampala.

Scope of Work:

The consultant will be responsible for managing our business development efforts. She or he will work closely with SIA partners and staff to create, curate, pursue and manage a steady pipeline of new business opportunities. The scope of work for the consultant broadly includes the following:

Lead Sourcing:

  • Develop a capture strategy for growing our book of business.
  • Track relevant online procurement websites on a weekly or more frequent basis to identify opportunities aligned with our skills and strategic interests
  • Identify new sources for leads and partners, both online and elsewhere
  • Coordinate with SIA partners to vet and scope potential opportunities for collaboration

Pipeline Management:

  • Track business development opportunities at all stages using CRM-based processes
  • Report on pipeline updates during weekly team meetings

Proposal Management:

  • Create proposal management plans and coordinate proposal development timelines with SIA team members and external partners
  • Manage proposal processes and ensure submissions comply with requirements; coordinate with communications/design consultant to develop visually appealing proposals
  • Contribute technical writing and content to proposals
  • Provide editorial and quality control review of outgoing proposals
  • Serve as a final check on compliance with proposal submission requirements

Additional Activities:

  • Identify ways to improve and streamline business development processes; propose and implement these suggestions as needed
  • Work with communications/design consultant to update and improve the collateral, website and other marketing materials
  • Identify relevant workshops and conferences; create proposals for presentations

What we are looking for:

  • Enthusiasm and creativity in experimenting with new and better ways to generate business
  • Experience sourcing proposal opportunities from a wide range of donor engagement in international development including specifically, USAID, EU donors, DFID, Foundations and opportunities to team with prime contractors.[SS1]
  • Experience managing business and proposal development responsibilities in a consulting and/or international development context
  • Experience with CRM and opportunity pipeline management
  • Proposal management experience and attention to detail regarding proposal compliance
  • Demonstrated excellent technical writing abilities, particularly on topics including digital financial services, mobile money/digital payments, financial inclusion, agricultural development, humanitarian cash transfers, private sector development, digital development, and ICT4D
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate with and direct teammates virtually, in multiple time zones, particularly in a small business/startup environment
  • Interest in and ability to quickly assess, propose and implement process improvements to business development operations and practices
  • Track record of success in securing funding with proposals in the international development sector
