The Montana Department of Transportation is currently recruiting for entry level Civil Engineers. We would especially like to welcome current college seniors who will graduate in December 2019 and May 2020 to apply!
MDT will be hiring up to 20 qualified individuals for placement in various Bureaus and Sections within the Highways and Engineering Division, including: Road Design, Hydraulics, Traffic, Survey, Bridge, Materials, Alternative Contracting, and Geotech. All positions for this posting will be located in Helena, MT.

*Road design*staff participate in assembling of the road plans package, which is the major part of the development of all highway projects in the Department of Transportation. Compiling the road plans package entails the proposal and evaluation of alternates, computation of geometric data, estimating of the plan quantities, assembly of the plan sheets, incorporating recommendations from other technical specialists, and writing of specifications needed to build highways on the Secondary, Primary, and Interstate Highway systems of the State of Montana. In addition to plans package preparation, this position requires preparing project reports.
Engineers in the*Bridge Bureau*are responsible for designing and developing construction plans and documents for bridge replacement and rehabilitation projects. This work involves evaluating the problem or proposal; interpreting data; analyzing a structural system; selecting alternatives; documenting designs and calculations; preparing plans and writing construction documents. The employee commits the Department to a specific course of action through this design work. Decisions made, and methods used are based on the engineer's knowledge and judgement. The engineer is responsible for minimizing errors in their work and discovering errors in other's work during design reviews.
*Materials Bureau*staff are responsible for ensuring the appropriate materials are incorporated into MDT's highways. Utilizing various testing methods, we test/accept all materials used in the construction of our highways and bridges. This work requires knowledge of the principles of materials testing; industry standards and processes and standardized testing procedures and protocols.
*Traffic design*staff participate in assembling of the plans package, which can include signing, pavement markings, geometrics and roadway safety improvements. Compiling the plans package entails the proposal and evaluation of alternates, computation of geometric data, estimating of the plan quantities, assembly of the plan sheets, incorporating recommendations from other technical specialists, and writing of specifications needed to build improvements on the Secondary, Primary, and Interstate Highway systems of the State of Montana. In addition to plans package preparation, this position requires preparing project reports.
Entry level*Geotechnical*personnel provide basic geotechnical engineering analysis and design and perform field investigations and subsurface exploration plans for existing and proposed highway infrastructure. This work involves evaluating the overall project purpose and requirements to determine geotechnical issues and impacts; collecting and interpreting data (subsurface investigation and lab testing); analyzing geotechnical elements (bearing pressures, settlement, lateral earth pressure, slope stability, foundation design, pavement support, etc.); selecting alternatives; documenting designs and calculations; and writing preliminary reports.
Engineers in MDT's*Alternative Contracting Section*are responsible for developing and managing the Departments alternative contracting methods including the Design-Build (DB) program; the Construction Manager/General Contractor (CM/GC) program; the Job Order Contracting (JOC) program; any other new and innovative contracting methods; and the contractor prequalification program. This work includes developing Requests for Qualifications and Requests for Proposals; leading Technical Review Teams; reviewing, evaluating, and selecting Contractors and Design Professionals to deliver complex highway, bridge and architectural projects; conducting on-site field reviews during construction; and continuously monitoring and updating the effectiveness of MDT's alternative contracting programs.
The*Hydraulic Section*is responsible for the hydraulic waterway designs and engineering studies necessary to complete all hydrologic and hydraulic aspects of the Montana Department of Transportation's highway construction and maintenance programs. This is an entry level Hydraulics Engineer position that assists the District Hydraulic Engineer with the design and engineering of bridge waterway openings, culverts, storm drains, and irrigation. Other duties include maintaining design files, participating in field inspections, preparing design recommendations and reports, and completing CADD designs as assigned.
/Knowledge/: Develops sufficient engineering knowledge, skill and judgment in a specific practice area to perform the routine engineering tasks in the assigned area. Although the knowledge acquired is in a specific work area, that knowledge and competence should reasonably transfer to other work areas at the same level.
Broad knowledge of engineering practices and principles and construction methods, processes and procedures, computer-assisted drafting and design software, and engineering techniques are required for projects of moderate complexity. A journey level knowledge of federal guidelines and procedures regarding road design and construction is also required.
/Skills:/ Possesses effective oral and written communication skills in order to assist with client, customer, or official contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignment or meetings.
Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology or a related degree. Related degrees may include Environmental Engineering, Geologic/Geotechnical Engineering, Materials Engineer, or Engineering Science. Prior work experience is not required for entry level.
