Job Description
SURS has an immediate opening on our communications team for a graphic designer to create, update and manage informational and educational materials and forms in print and digital formats. The State Universities Retirement System of Illinois (SURS) is one of the five state-funded retirement plans that provide retirement, survivor, death and disability benefits on behalf of approximately 245,000 members from 61 employers in Illinois, including state universities, community colleges and state agencies. As of June 30, 2022, SURS defined benefit plan was valued at approximately $22.6 billion while SURS RSP and DCP defined contribution plans were valued at approximately $3.5 billion and $8.5 million, respectively. Position: Publications Editor – Graphic Designer

Civil Service Classification: Publications Editor

Position Type: Full-time | Based in Champaign, IL

Main Duties
  • Design, update and manage informational materials and forms in print and digital formats
  • Create and update lobby monitors and internal website content
  • Photography and photo editing
  • Copywriting and editing
  • Videography and video editing
  • Backup SURS webmaster – post content when necessary

Required Qualifications

1. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling four (4) years (48 months), from the categories below:
A. credit for college level training in any field
    • 30 semester hours equals 1 year (12 months)
    • 60 semester hours equals 2 years (24 months)
    • 90 semester hours equals 3 years (36 months)
    • 120 semester hours or higher equals 4 years (48 months)
OR
B. professional experience in editing and producing publications
2. Two (2) years (24 months) of progressively more advanced/responsible professional experience in editing and producing publications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Knowledge of publication techniques
  • Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming
  • Skills conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance
  • Ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas verbally and in writing so others will understand.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand
  • Ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
  • Ability to come up with a number of ideas about a topic

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in graphic design, fine arts, or related field
  • One year experience in graphic design
  • Familiarity with design/editing software and technologies such as InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat Pro, WordPress, Premiere Pro and Audition
  • Command of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • A strong portfolio of design, illustrations, or other graphics
  • Ability to make design choices, such as selecting fonts and colors, for all content
  • Ability to collaborate with other creative team members to produce content
  • Ability to adhere to tight deadlines, prioritize workload, and achieve effective results
