State Bar of Michigan Executive Director Position Description Organizational Overview The State Bar of Michigan (SBM) is a nationally recognized leader in fostering innovations to serve the public interest, the legal profession and ensure access to justice.The Bar is dedicated to its mission to "aid in promoting improvements in the administration of justice and advancements to jurisprudence, in improving relations between the legal profession and the public, and in promoting the interests in the legal profession in the State."SBM is an integrated bar of 46,000 members organized as a public corporate body and regulated by the Michigan Supreme Court.SBM's $11m budget is funded by license fees set by the Supreme Court.There are 75.5 FTEs.A 32-member Board of Bar Commissioners governs SBM.The 150-member RepresentativeAssembly serves as the Bar's policy-making body.There are 23 standing committees and workgroups and 44 substantive and practice-related sections.The executive... director is accountable to the Board of Commissioners.Position Summary The executive director is the chief staff executive officer and is responsible for staff leadership and management of SBM, including implementation of the strategic plan, oversight of day-to-day programs and operations, and cultivating strong relationships with the Bar's strategic partners.The executive director represents the interests of SBM and the Michigan legal community at local, state, and national levels.The executive director assists in fulfilling SBM obligations to the administration of Character & Fitness, Attorney Grievance Commission, Judicial TenureCommission, Unauthorized Practice of Law, and the Client Protection Fund.Key Duties Advise and support the Board of Commissioners regarding strategic opportunities, challenges, and threatsBuild the governing capacity of the Board of Commissioners, Representative Assembly, committees, and sections through policies and best practicesCollaborate with the president and officers to fulfill their roles and responsibilitiesDevelop operational goals and objectives congruent with the strategic planEnsure compliance with Supreme Court Rules and Revised Judicature Act governing theBarCultivate and maintain relationships with the Supreme Court and appropriate legislative and executive branch leaders to further the Bar's missionPromote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the organization and the professionIn collaboration with strategic stakeholders, develop, lead and support initiatives that promote access to justice within the legal systemImplement policies and programs efficiently and effectivelyAdvance programming and services that support members' professional development and wellbeingEnrich SBM reputation within the profession, organized bar community, and, among membersExercise sound financial management and oversight in compliance with best practices and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulationsFoster a high functioning, dynamic, and collaborative staff cultureOversee sound risk management policies and processes, including cybersecurityOptimize the use of technology to serve staff, members, and the public interestAssure adequate resources, training, and support to retain and develop staffCommunicate regularly with internal and external stakeholdersLead post-pandemic changes to operations, staff management, and governanceRequired Skills Strategic leadership and insight to foster innovation and collaborationExcellent interpersonal skills for developing and maintaining relationshipsTechnological literacy with an understanding of systems developmentFinancial management and budgetingExcellent verbal, written, and presentation skillsFamiliarity with the legal profession, court administration, and lawyer regulationIntegrity and high ethical standardsExperience Minimum of 10 years of experience as the chief staff executive or in a senior management position with a non-profit, association, foundation, or law-related organization
