Veterinary Clinic Technician

Job Summary:

Under the direction of Clinic Technician Supervisor and Medical Services Manager, assist in the provision of medical care of animals in the clinic. Assists veterinarians in the health care of animals and the analysis of animal disease; rendering emergency treatment in life-threatening situations to sustain life; performing follow-up treatment as prescribed by a veterinarian; ensuring all animals within the facility are treated with respect; performing related work as required. Must have the ability to work under stress and pressure, ability to work with minimal supervision as well as part of a team, to ensure timely, quality medical care for all animals in the clinic. This position is based in the veterinary clinic within the medical department at St. Hubert’s Madison location but flexibility to work at other locations may occasionally be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Report health concerns to attending veterinarian.
2. Provide excellent in-person and telephone client service as well as answer questions.
3. Actively promote spay and neuter and educate clients on responsible animal ownership.
4. Triage all patients as they are checked in.
5. Provide excellent patient care.
6. Assist veterinarians in surgery as needed.
7. Calculate and administer anesthesia to all surgical patients per anesthetic protocol.
8. Maintain all necessary logs and patient records.
9. Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols.
10. Administer animal vaccinations, tests, medications, and treatments as directed.
11. Greet the public, interact with customers, perform routine pet health evaluations, vaccines, and other preventative care, and provide post-operative care advice.
12. Handle an average of 100 dogs and cats per day.
13. Use appropriate mandatory safety equipment for fractious or feral animals.
14. Participate on committees and special projects as assigned.
15. Always represent St. Hubert’s in a professional and courteous manner. Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees recognizing their individual contributions to the success of the organization.
16. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

• Eligibility and willingness to apply for euthanasia technician certification.
• Knowledge or willingness to learn characteristics of animal behavior.
• Ability to learn proper animal restraint techniques.
• Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and cooperative relationships with co-workers, volunteers, and the public.
• Able to multi-task, work as a team, and be a self-starter.
• Ability to function calmly in situations that require a high degree of sensitivity, tact, and diplomacy.
• Good written and oral communication skills.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, able to multi-task and prioritize.
• Dependable, reliable, and efficient.
• Stay up to date on the most current shelter medicine protocols recommended by UC Davis.
• Ability to identify personal limitations and be willing to ask for help.
• Excellent organizational skills, perform routine clinical laboratory tests, and maintain electronic records and files.
• Proficient in the use and application of computer technology and programs including Microsoft Office, internet, and database management software to efficiently complete work.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.

• Ability to lift 50 pounds unassisted regularly, 50+ pounds assisted.
• Ability to be comfortable working with cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish, and wildlife.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily, including but not limited to lifting and carrying, reaching, stooping, squatting, and bending. Regularly moves about the facilities to coordinate work.
• Due to the nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; common allergens; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures.

Education and Experience:

• Minimum of 1 year of experience working in veterinary medicine preferred.
