Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Psychiatrist provides integrated mental and behavioral health services to SHHC patients and is responsible for coordinating SHHC mental health care services with other SHHC clinicians and members of the SHHC mental health team.  The Psychiatrist’s duties include evaluating SHHC patients, prescribing and managing medications, and providing short term therapy and group therapy sessions for SHHC patients as may be necessary, in collaboration with SHHC primary care clinicians and with the SHHC licensed clinical social worker and/or other SHHC behavioral health staff.  The Psychiatrist works with the Chief Medical Officer to establish standards and treatment protocols for mental and behavioral health services, and supervises other behavioral health professionals on the SHHC staff.  If a consultant, the Psychiatrist reports to the CEO for HR and scheduling purposes.  As a key member of the SHHC clinical staff, the Psychiatrist provides guidance for the entire SHHC staff in behavioral health integration, serving as a resource for staff meetings and trainings, and on the spot patient care. 

 

The Psychiatrist is a key member of the care team working to provide quality comprehensive services to patients and will work collaboratively with staff to provide team-based coordinated care.  The Psychiatrist will demonstrate the values consistent with Squirrel Hill Health Center’s mission and will work with the SHHC team to make the Center a Medical Home for patients of all backgrounds.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Patient Care:

  • Elicits and records information about patient’s mental health history.
  • Evaluates patient to determine general mental health status.
  • Assesses patient to create an appropriate treatment plan.
  • Initiates, administers and/or supervises implementation of the treatment plan.
  • Prescribes and/or monitors medications.
  • Ensures that behavioral health care is completely, accurately, and promptly documented in the Electronic Medical Record.
  • Maintains and monitors patient confidentiality.
  • Collaborates with SHHC clinical staff members around high quality care for individual patients.
  • Refers patients to other practitioners for specialized treatment as appropriate.
  • When essential, makes house and emergency calls to attend to patients unable to visit office or clinic.
  • Maintains staff privileges and affiliated coverage agreements with privileged physicians at UPMC or other facilities in order to provide continuing care to patients requiring inpatient care.
  • Is available to patients and clinicians by phone as needed during non-scheduled hours.
  • Serves on hospital committees as required to maintain associate/active staff privileges as per the by-laws/rules and regulations of the hospitals.
  • Provides supervision of SHHC’s licensed clinical social worker and/or other behavioral health staff members.
  • Serves as a resource for SHHC management and staff in assuring behavioral health integration.
  • Prepares and signs all forms needed for patient care and billing within one working day.
  • Abides by the policies and procedures of the Squirrel Hill Health Center and acts as a representative of the center in the community.

2. Administration:

  • With Chief Medical Officer and other SHHC clinicians, works to create a smoothly functioning mental/behavioral health team to provide integrated primary health care and mental health services to SHHC patients.
  • Collaborates with SHHC partner organizations as appropriate, under the direction of the CEO.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited medical school plus completion of a 3-year residency program in psychiatry.
  • Board certification in psychiatry. 
  • A license without restriction to practice medicine in Pennsylvania
  • Full active medical staff membership with privileges at least at UPMC.
  • Participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs.
  • Enrollment in required managed care and insurance contracts.
  • Demonstrated sound problem-solving and decision-making ability.
  • Demonstrated skill in planning and organizing work, managing time, and meeting commitments.
  • Demonstrated well-developed interpersonal skills to interact in sensitive and/or complex situations with a variety of people; expertise with multicultural populations.
  • Demonstrated very high level of communication skills to effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Computer skills.
  • BLS certified.
  • Dedication to providing high quality health care to all patients.
