Job Description

Job title: Mechanical Engineer Intern - Automation Designer

Reports to: Design Manager

Supervisory responsibilities: None

Summary/objective: Specialty Tooling Systems (STS) currently has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer/Automation Designer Intern or Co-Op Student! Under the supervision of our design staff, you will be supporting the design and development of intelligent systems and industrial systems control. The ideal candidate will be motivated with a positive attitude that collaborates well with our team members and possesses an understanding of basic computer systems and design software. The candidate should also be trustworthy, receptive to feedback, and eager to learn.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate with Design Engineers, Estimators and Project Managers to provide support for various projects or procedures throughout the company
  • Translate 3D cad data, create overlays, and generate 2D views or layouts
  • Assist in the creation of 2D build prints and layouts
  • Assist in the creation or maintenance of internal documentation
  • Conduct research of purchase components required for current projects

Required Competency, Education, And Experience:

  • Must be actively working towards a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering at an accredited College or University
  • Satisfactory completion of introductory engineering courses and a basic understanding of engineering principles
  • Basic understanding of computer systems and organization of file structures
  • Basic knowledge of SOLIDWORKS mechanical design software
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously, exercise extreme attention to detail, and maintain confidentiality on sensitive projects
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times
  • Ability to remain flexible while working in a fast paced, frequently changing environment and work well in a team-based environment
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

Preferred Education And Experience:

  • Some history of Engineering related courses
  • Experience with Autocad software (any level)
  • Some mechanical aptitude - school, work, or hobby related. (i.e. automotive repair, construction, carpentry, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of Excel, Word, and Outlook (or similar)

Work environment: Office setting in a manufacturing environment.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away
  • Ability to use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds

Position type and expected hours of work: This is a paid internship. The internship’s hours are flexible and may vary, depending on Intern’s availability and Company’s workload. Additional work may be available for the Intern following the conclusion of the internship.

Travel: None typically. 0 - 1% potential travel associated with role as needed. Travel may require: International, Air travel, and Overnight stay for several nights.
