WE ARE SEEKING Chemists with 3-8 years of diverse experience in chemical product development. A broad understanding of the chemical practice from different market segments is desired, including oilfield, biomedical, industrial, or analytical chemistry. You should be comfortable with chemical synthesis and common analytical techniques, with a strong grasp of physical chemistry (thermodynamics, fluids, materials, etc.). You will be exposed to a dynamic product development working closely with a variety of engineering disciplines to produce advanced, high technology products. At Sparx you will work with clients on a wide range of projects involving everything from oilfield tools, medical devices, chemical sensors, and ‘real-world industrial or biological fluids’. Top candidates will have the skills and track record to help support internal R&D efforts for the development of new chemical technologies. The opportunity to practice internal research to support new product development in a commercial environment is extremely unique, therefore, applicants should expect to maintain high standards and self-discipline to support external clients and internal R&D at the same time.
We operate across many fields such as industrial, oil and gas, medical, automation, and consumer products. You will be exposed to many types of technology from the prototype stage to scaled production and will have the opportunity to hone your current expertise and learn skills both within and outside of traditional chemistry, working alongside engineers with mechanical, embedded programming and electronic backgrounds.
We are constantly innovating and creating unique technologies that bring together all facets of science, engineering and software. Rapid prototyping is a daily effort. We are very hands-on, utilizing in-house equipment such as 3D printers, CNC machines, CAD and simulation software, building and testing prototypes on a daily basis. The chemistry group works closely with these tools to integrate chemical technology with the traditional engineering disciplines. We design products and integrated systems from the ground up, with many projects starting with a simple diagram on a white board.
You will be working in small teams with other highly skilled scientists, engineers, and developers to create products and software services for most any industry. You should have a proven track record of being able to pick up new tasks and tools, be multi-faceted in your skillset and interests, and preferably have some history of "tinkering" in your spare time. Expect to be constantly challenged as part of an organization that strives to push the technological envelope in delivering innovative solutions for our clients.
Sparx is a casual and highly collaborative work environment. Our relatively small team helps us utilize the best of each player on different projects.
This position requires a Chemistry BS or MS, experience in prep scale synthesis, and we would prefer some history of experience designing products. Chemical Engineers with a BS and have practiced chemical synthesis in industry may also be considered. Experience in the following areas is also preferred:
- Strong problem solving and communication (verbal and written) skills
- Chemical synthesis, analytical chemistry techniques and methods
- Strong skills in the preparation of chemical solutions
- Excellent mathematics skills and Matlab
- Experience with chemical software for drawing and molecular modeling
- Experience in troubleshooting
- Experience interfacing with internal/external customers and vendors
- Design for Manufacturing
- Verification and testing
- Proven track record in chemical safety practices and laboratory maintenance, inventory management and waste handling
- Team player with humility to perform all lab tasks including cleaning
- Willing to help maintain lab cleanliness at a high level
- Project management experience
- Software: ChemDraw, Enotebook, Chem3D, NWChem, Gaussian, Statistica, Excel, MATLAB
- Lab Skills: Prep scale synthesis, TLC, Recrystallization, Flash Chromatography, Solution Prep
- Spectroscopy: NMR, FTIR, UV/vis, Fluorescent, Luminescent
At Sparx, we move quickly and work on a wide variety of projects. Our engineers and scientists are challenged daily and must be able to adapt. Given the diversity of our projects, we are more concerned with your work ethic and your fit than your experience in any specific technology. You will be dealing directly with clients to help them meet their needs in an efficient and predictable manner. You are not the type to sit on the sidelines waiting for someone to tell you what to do next.
We seek problem solvers, not problem finders, and we hold our scientists and engineers to a high standard of productivity. There are no "weak links" at Sparx. You will be surrounded by high performers and every member of our team is able to trust each other to get their job done effectively.
