GROUND SEGMENT TECHNICIAN
The SpaceX Ground Segment team is responsible for a worldwide network of tracking antennas for Falcon, Dragon, Starlink, and Starship and the integration of NASA flight operations interfaces. The team is also responsible for launch site communications including all infrastructure cabling, launch pad, landing pad, and recovery RF telemetry, optical tracking/video systems, operational voice, control room systems, communications readiness testing, and real-time operations.
The role of ground segment technician on the team involves many aspects of the installation, testing, and maintenance of the ground segment hardware and facilities. This includes mechanical, electrical, RF, cable and harness fabrication, equipment logistics, and subcontractor coordination. Frequent travel will be required to the launch sites as well as the remote ground stations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Assist in requirements development, design review, vendor interactions, and testing of RF, voice, video, ground station, and data systems
+ Operate ground segment systems including ground stations to ensure successful uplink of commands and downlink of telemetry to mission control
+ Perform activities to plan and validate SpaceX ground segment systems and joint operations with partners and providers
+ Perform real-time anomaly resolution for ground system malfunctions and quickly return mission-critical systems to service
+ Develop and execute testing and maintenance schedules on ground segment facilities and equipment
+ Execute and maintain procedures required for ground segment operation, mission planning, ground terminal operations, including all support functions necessary to meet mission requirements
+ Build, fix, and maintain ground segment hardware and equipment
+ Configure, operate, and maintain satellite ground station antennas and sub systems
+ Test prime and redundancy equipment on a regular basis, and maintain logs and sufficient spares
+ Monitor and analyze RF related equipment
+ Interface with external partners (private and government) to install and maintain interfaces for ground-to-space and ground-to-ground communication systems
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
+ 3+ years of telecommunications experience as a technician in the aerospace or a related industry
+ 2+ years of hands-on RF or related experience, including maintaining a ground station or tower site, using standard design methodologies, constructing communication systems, and testing systems on-site and in real-time
+ High school diploma or GED
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
+ Experience with electronic testing and troubleshooting
+ Ability to read, understand, and follow electrical/mechanical drawings and schematics
+ Experience with cable and harness building and repair
+ Experience with low earth orbit tracking antennas
+ Experience designing and constructing server racks (UPS, PDUs, cable management, servers, network devices)
+ Experience with voice and/or audio communication systems
+ Experience with facilities and related infrastructure construction and maintenance
+ Experience with IP and HD-SDI video cameras and infrastructure
+ Marine and harsh-environment experience (helpful if supporting a recovery mission)
+ Knowledge of network standards and configuration (TCP/IP, SNMP, serial communications)
+ Sound computer skills: MS Office, Visio, and Web applications
+ Knowledge of industry standards (BICSI, NEC, TIA/EIA); different types of fiber (MM, SM) for interior and exterior usage; Cat5E, Cat6 and Cat6A data cabling; and cable pathways such as conduit, fire penetrations, and cable trays
+ Experience with low voltage AC and DC power distribution
+ Operational knowledge of network analyzers and signal generators, oscilloscopes and multi-meters, soldering wires and connectors, various crimping tools, wire stripping techniques, Ohm's law, continuity testing, pinning out a military type connector, routing and tie wrapping cables, drilling and tapping holes, and building junction boxes
+ Ability to operate articulating boom lifts, fork lifts, and other heavy machinery
+ Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
+ Meticulous attention to detail, standards, and documentation
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
+ Must be able to distinguish between different colors and possess manual dexterity to complete fine motor tasks
+ Must be able to travel frequently to the launch sites as well as the remote ground stations
+ General physical fitness is required for some work areas
+ Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
+ Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions in small openings and climbing hand over hand
+ Ability to work at elevated heights
+ Typically exposed to work in extreme outdoor environments - heat, cold, rain
+ Work performed in an environment requiring exposure to fumes, odors, and noise
+ Typically 40 hour work weeks; schedule varies depending on site operational needs and flexibility is required
+ Ability to pass Air Force background checks for Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg
