Pharmacy Technician Needed at the George E. Wahlen Medical Center - Salt Lake City, UT

Place of Performance: Salt Lake City VA Medical Center (The George E. Wahlen Medical Center, SLC, UT)

Schedule: 9:30am – 6:00pm (subject to change based on facility needs)

Requirements:

  • Shall be 18 years of age and have a high school Diploma or GED.
  • Passed the National Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB) exam
  • Must have 1-year experience or completed college courses in the sciences or mathematics.
  • Experience with computer systems such as VISTA, CPRS, ScriptPro, Talyst, Microsoft Office and Pyxis preferred.
  • Must be a US citizen

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Reads and interprets prescriptions
  • Obtains proper medication or material in the proper strength and dosage
  • Determine proper amounts and counts
  • Pours, measures the prescription
  • Affixes proper label
  • Records required data on Pharmacy’s copy of prescription/order
  • After final check by Pharmacist, dispenses medication in ambulatory care or discharge situations
  • For unit-dose medications, performs final review of medication when prepared by another technician, to be dispensed to inpatient areas (med carts, ward stock, etc.)
  • Fills unit dosage carts independently without secondary review
  • Answer questions from Pharmacy personnel and non-pharmacy personnel regarding drug distribution tasks in the pharmacy
  • Identifies basic therapeutic problems such as duplicate therapy with drugs in the same class and alerts the pharmacist to the possible need for clinical intervention
  • Contract technicians may be asked to cover for the executive secretary
  • Other assignments include but are not limited to:
    • Involvement in inpatient pharmacy services including aseptic admixture preparation including cytotoxic agents
  • Automatic and on-demand ward stock replenishment
  • Maintenance and operation of automated prepackaging storage and dispensing equipment
  • Assembly and documentation of controlled substance requests
  • Process, prepare, and dispense legend drugs, narcotic drugs, and OTC medications.
  • Operate pharmacy phone system and pager system (American Messaging, Wave ware, or other)
  • Prepare prescriptions for mailing using the USPS requirements including special handling for narcotics, freezer pack drugs, high cost drugs, etc. The technician shall be able to process various classifications of mail, and work within the rules governing other shippers such as UPS, FedEx, and Internet mail tracking.
  • Properly packaging with documentation of single unit of use medications
  • Provides various technical support services within the pharmacy department
  • Provides services related to inpatients and/or ambulatory patients.
  • Process, fills/distributes outpatient prescriptions for non-scheduled legend drugs and medical devices, over-the-counter products/supply items.
  • Distributes unit dose medications, ward stock items and intravenous admixtures, and stock management
  • Responsible for operation, maintenance, re-stocking, and troubleshooting of automated dispensing equipment.
  • Responsible for preparation and maintenance of various logs, records, and reports
  • Staffing Pharmacy TIP lines
  • Coverage for Pharmacy Secretary if needed
  • Performs some of all functions or other duties as assigned
  • Performs TIP lines duties for refill prescriptions and other associate duty requirements.
  • Outpatient assignments include but are not limited to:
  • Preparation of prescription final product
  • Filling, labeling, counting, and assisting with all aspects of the preparation of prescription and non-prescription medications and supplies
  • These duties include working with VASLCHCS computer systems, ScriptPro, Talyst, Pyxis CII Safe, Staffing pharmacy TIP Lines, and answering pharmacy phones, speaking with physicians, nurses, nurse practitioner, ancillary staff members, and other hospital employees or patients.
  • Pharmacy Technicians shall develop the knowledge and skills to be successful in the following
  • VA computer software packages including VISTA, CPRS, ScriptPro, Talyst, and Pyxis.
  • Automated dispensing processes including Script Talk, computer printers, fax, bar code scanners, pill counters, scales, TPN compounding machine, repeater pumps, and prepacking machines.
