Job Description
Southern College of Optometry, a leader in optometric educaton is currently recruting for an Optician I opening for our Focal Point location (Crosstown Concourse). POSITION OVERVIEW Reporting to the Director-Ophthalmic Materials and Services, the incumbent directs the work assignments for the students/interns and/or work study students as determined by the supervisor. The incumbent is also responsible for the provision of patient care and student/intern instruction as part of the overall management of The Eye Center or other external locations. Incumbent is expected to provide exceptional customer service to patients and students/interns as an important part of the health care team. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Assists patients in frame selection, fitting and dispensing of prescriptions. Involves students/interns in the process of providing optical services in a manner resulting in excellent service to patients and an effective experience for students/interns. Provides professional-level adjustment and/or repair of patients’ glasses. Provides opportunities for students/interns to gain experience in this function in a manner consistent with excellent quality of work with the most positive possible patient outcome. Assists the Director-Ophthalmic Materials & Services in maintaining inventory of frames, lenses, eye glass cases, and other associated materials for optimum performance in accordance with providing materials for patient’s prescription. Provides lab operation support under the direction of the Lead Lab Technician; edges and finishes prescription eyewear ensuring quality fabrication; tests, adjusts, calibrates, cleans and repairs assigned equipment according to schedule or need. Becomes familiar with insurance & Vision Benefit Plans to assist Director with training in and processing of claims; duties may include the processing of insurance orders on insurance websites. Processes optical orders by receiving, checking, and verifying prescriptions; checks off finished prescriptions after verification and files appropriately; inputs data into CompuLink; may perform other clerical duties such as reconciling accounts payable, answering phones, taking messages, and/or notifying patients when orders are ready for pick-up. Provides direct personal service to all members of the public who are physically present in the clinical facilities of SCO, assuring that no one is left alone in the frame selection/dispensing areas at any time. Provides operational support to the contact lens service: duties may include lens orders, lens orders via insurance websites, patient notification, contact lens inventory data entry and clerical duties associated with ordering/exchange/rejection of contact lenses. Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor. JOB SPECIFICATIONS Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Some post-secondary education is preferred. Optical training is preferred. Active participation in the apprenticeship program toward licensure is strongly encouraged. Experience: Minimum of 2 years related experience.
