Extended Day Program Assistant

DEFINITION: Under general supervision of the Director of Extended Day Programs and the general direction of the Extended Day Program Leader, the individual in this support the Extended Day Program Lead in the implementation of the Extended Day program. The person in this position assists in the implementation of a before and after school child development program. Performs relate duties as assigned.


CLASSIFICATION CHARACTERISTICS: This position is the first tier classification in the Extended Day Program job family and supports the work of the Extended Day Lead position. The person in this position supervises, instructs, and interacts with students enrolled in the Extended Day. The person in this position is evaluated by the Director of Extended Day. Representative Duties: Incumbents may perform any combination of the essential functions shown below. 1. Implement instructional and recreational lesson plans and activities for students in both indoor and outdoor settings;
A. Provide input to Extended Day Leads in the development of lesson plans and activities;
B. Assist students with homework and related instructional activities as directed by the Extended Day Lead;
C. Implement and supervise recreational activities, including participation in group games, both indoor and outdoor areas;
D. Set up indoor and outdoor activity areas;
E. Pick-up students at classrooms and/or take students after school enrichment/SPEF classes;
F. Assists and support other resource personnel who provide special programs;
G. Attend staff meetings and professional development meetings;
H. Performs other related duties as assigned.


2. Maintain a positive and safe environment for all students:
A. Support the Extended Day Lead in maintaining a positive environment that is safe, stimulating, and nurturing for all children in the Extended Day program;
B. Ensure the safety of students in offsite field trips by utilizing active supervision techniques and safety protocols;
C. Utilize positive discipline techniques in management of student behavior;
D. Treat all children with dignity and respect;
E. Assist in snack and food preparation and clean-up and follow proper food handling procedures;
F. Oversee the implementation of basic health and safety practices;
G. Follow guidelines and protocols for medical emergencies and disaster situations;
H. Performs other related duties as assigned.


Knowledge of:

  • Basic knowledge of Child Development ages, 5-14
  • Basic methods, procedures and techniques of cooking, baking, food preparation
  • Basic sanitation and safety practices and procedures
  • Student supervision techniques
  • Positive student discipline strategies
  • Basic knowledge of K-8 curriculum
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to learn various software programs. Ability to
  • Demonstrate an understanding, patient, and receptive attitude towards students of varied age groups including students with special needs
  • Effectively supervise and motivate students
  • Assist students with homework completion and provide individualized instruction
  • Participate in physical games and activities with students; • Communicate effectively in oral and written form in English
  • Perform routine clerical tasks and operate a variety of office related machines and equipment
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, children, and parents


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma or equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Desired Qualifications
  • Completion of a minimum of six (6) units in Early Childhood Education or Child Development
  • One year of successful experience working in a child care program working with multi-age and diverse groups of children. Licenses/Certificates
  • Current CPR and First Aid certificate

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Working -

  • Indoor and outdoor environment
  • May be exposed to extreme weather conditions, including long periods in the sun
  • Work on a variety of surfaces: carpet, tile, grass and asphalt; wet, slippery, or hot
  • Moderate noise levels in a variety of settings
  • Contact with blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials

Physical Requirements - While performing the duties of this job, the person in this position is:

  • Frequently required to walk and stand for extended periods of time; bend, stoop, kneel and reach in all directions; possess manual/finger dexterity to operate equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects; hear and understand speech at normal levels; communicate so that others can clearly understand normal conversation; see for the purpose of observing students
  • Regularly required to: exert 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move a person or object; Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
